Posted my weekly rare coin market report video today...

link

I have a feeling about the rare coin market. There's something going on and i like it. just a feeling, not reflected so much in prices yet, just a feeling. I discuss it in more detail in this week's video.

I think HRH instincts are accurate. My own thought mirror his thought

that is why I have accelerated my purchases of rare and quality coins

While prices are ftrm, they are not yet escalating in a manner that is

causing me to chase them price wise. I believe that his is a cautionary

word to the wise. If you really need a coin, buy it now rather then later.

Interesting report. My guess is that if these observations are indeed correct, it's really just reflecting what's going on in society as a whole, i.e. a vast, widening chasm between the Haves and the Have-Nots. From the report, the Common Coin is not doing particularly well, only the high-end stuff. What that tells me is that the Uber-Rich have, for now, bought enough mansions, sports cars, private jets, and other toys, and may be now turning to coins as a place to park money. Of course, they're going to go after the best graded material. All makes sense to me, but is not necessarily great for the hobby as a whole as it reflects a small, elite collector base.

But what do I know? Thanks for the post!

I believe that even folks , other then the uber rich, are moving dollars into rare

coins as well as PMs. I believe that the next three tio four months should show

the results of this impression.Whu shouldnt we use our hard won knowledge

of coins and our contacts in an effort to protect the value of whatever wealth

we may have.It seems a smart and sensible action indeed.

I have found that Walkers in MS-67 & MS-67+, especially with nice toning are very strong

and I believe will get even stronger in demand and price. Average coins remain meh.

As for Franklins, they are cyclical and some day will shine in the sun again. But for now,

    it is not to be.

Are you familiar with HRH's old newsletter Inside View, published in the 1980'S?

You need to review them, and you will see that HRH made a lot of predictions at that time also. Virtually NONE panned out.

So forgive me if I am not as upbeat as you.

I would like to see an actual list of 50 coins and grades that would be winners. I have not had a bunch of winners lately.

If i was going to tie up 100k or more for a while it would not be in coins. I have a gut feeling that i would be lucky to end up with 50k a decade later. I have been pretty active in coins for over 8 years and have made a little, but i would not be comfortable putting 100k in for investing reason. I know a lot less about other types of investments compared to the time i have in coins and feel a lot better about putting 100k into those. It would not scare me one bit to put another million in real estate but 100k in coins would. Others will feel much different.

Like everything, some will score big and the bottom 85 percent will get schooled by the smart 15 percent of coin collectors. It also helps to run in the right circles, my circle keeps ending at turn 4.image

Well, my golden circle of dealers keep me in the loop as to what is undervalued

and what is overvalued in the market place. Without there insight I might well be

Wouldn't the fact that the average coin is not doing well right now mean its time to by the average coin and not chase the top end?

A coin dealer thinks the value of coins is going to increase? Shocking! Seriously, sounds like hype to me.

I don't quite have the feeling yet but it might be I'm not as sensitive. I'll watch for the coin
market to recover before the stock market and lead the whole economy upward but don't expect
to have the feeling we're on the verge of a real recovery until the stock market starts looking
    weaker.

There's no reason the coin market can't start this increase in the near future even before the
stock market heads lower. People everywhere are looking for investment vehicles since bankers
are getting all the interest and stocks are returning very little in dividends.

One thing a little different this time is that even the numismatic market is becoming international.
This will become increasingly apparent over time.

Eventually interest rates will have to increase to keep it all in check but this is farther over the
    horizon yet.

Is David talking about rare coins or rare GOLD coins? There's a big difference for most of us.

Top coins are always going to garner top dollars because the people that buy them aren't affected by the general ups and downs of the economy. I don't need a special feeling to know this.

As for the general market, given the lack of long term confidence with respect to the economy, I don't see how pricing can strengthen appreciably without an increase in disposible income among the general population to generate that strength.

PMH, what you say is very true. That is why the two tier market is expanding.

People who collect top of the line coins, seem to be doing OK and thus this

top tier of the market is very strong and expanding. The lower tier of coins

is collected by a more middle class section of the population and since they

are at present being hammered, that lower tier is flat to down. No real surprise

here. We have had a two tier market for some time but I do not believe that the

gap in strength vrs weakness, has ever been so disparate.

PMH, what you say is very true. That is why the two tier market is expanding.

There is at least one other reason for the increasing bifurcation of the market, that being that the overall market is becoming increasingly and substantially more sophisticated.

I'll cite three reasons for this. First, the internet continues to educate all of us at a rapid pace. Second, the economy continues to send all but the diehards to the sidelines or exit, which makes the remaining pool of buyers an overall more sophisticated crowd. And third, the shortage of young blood means that the average buyer keeps on getting older and smarter. (BTW, none of these trends can last forever.)

I believe that the coin market will continue to undulate, cycle rotate

fluctuate and continue to bifurcate. In all things, it is very difficult to

time ones actions. If you do win it is more by chance and luck, then

then thru intellectual perspicacity. History has shown, if one buys the

right coins, in the right condition at the right price and holds

them for an extended period of time, their collection will make

them money. Often, a lot of money. I will say, that getting all four

parameters correct, will require, money, patience, skill and experience.

I have a feeling that the "bottom" is possibly on the verge of a collapse (relatively).

The problem is that even with a "bifucated" market, the pinnacle coins are there because of the mountain, or base, underneath. If the bottom goes, will there still be the same interest at the top?

A thought: if going one up on the competition (ie demand) drives prices, including rarities, what would happen if the competition melts - like the pun? - away in that there is nobody to go up on? Even if it takes only two bidders to drive up the price of a single lot at auction, I wonder with the possible loss of base that ultimately these two speculative bidders may begin to lose interest...
