Huge Changes and Rate Increases with Registered Mail?

dragondragon Posts: 4,548 ✭✭
Just came from the PO where I mailed a small box that weighed about 2.5 lbs. and insured for $8k

I purposely went with Registered since I know how high the insurance rates are with Priority. I figured it would be about $14.00 - $18.00 for that package and she tells me it's $34.75 ???

Did insurance rates for Registered mail just go crazy or what?

Yes, registered mail fees and insurance have gone way up. I discovered that over a year ago when I had a coin shipped from PCGS after I had submitted the coin to be re-holdered at a show.

i think the insurance has always been high for high priced items. I don't think they raised them dramatically.

Yes! They've always been VERY high for 5k+ packages. I sent out a few 5k dollar packages that weighed maybe 5 pounds each. They went 200 miles, same state. It cost me 55-65 (don't remember what) a piece. Would had been cheaper driving and delivering. image

Yep. I thought what I paid on Saturday was steep. Postage (flat rate $4.95) box plus registered/insured for a $700 item was $19.85.

USPS insurance rates have become obcsene IMO. I wonder if this is due to rising postal employee theft or fraud or both?

Must be a very recent change because their web site shows lower rates.

Just wait to see what happens if the USPS outsources to kiosks in grocery stores/convenience stores/etc......THAT has me honestly worried!

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

It appears the Priority rate really added onto the total. Registered at $1,000 insurance is $14.65 then the other $7,000 insurance cost $9.80 and the Priority rate on top added the last $10.30 it seems.

The breakdown on the postal receipt was:

    Zone 5 Priority mail $9.35
    Delivery Conf. $0.70
Registered w/ $8000.00 Article Insurance $24.45 (this was the killer)

....and why do they charge for Priority rates unless you request it? Wouldn't just regular 1st class for a small 2 lb. box been a lot less?

Priority rates are automatically charged on Registered Mail that weighs more than 13 ounces or is larger than certain size restrictions; this automatic bump in rates might apply to First Class, too. The weight of your package automatically added the Priority rate. Did you sell this item through PayPal? I ask because you added the Delivery Confimation on top of the other services.

Anything over 14 ounces and priority rates kick in. They also depend on the zone you are sending to. Why did you pay for DC? You would have been better using the flate rate box for $5.20.

It looks like they did change their fee structure for registered.

I recently sent two ATB pucks to Calif. in one of the older priority mail boxes that was used before it went to flat rate. Was actually about 75 cents cheaper than flat rate.

How does the U.S. postal rates/fees compare to other countries?

No, it was a submission of 11 coins. I always use the DC so I can track it online.

Do they always scan it? I was told the USPS doesn't want you to know where the package is, so it seems strange that they would allow you to purchase and use supplemental tracking.

Insurance is a profit center and I don't believe that rates are regulated like postage rates are.

I don't think recent increases in registered insurance were that big this time. When they restructured their insurance fees a couple years ago, the break even level for insured "steal me" mail and registered mail went up to a little over $1000, where it had been around $600.

weight and insurance is what hurt you. Try registered flat rate priority next time.

It always irritated me to pay someone to deliver a package and then to have to pay them extra to not steal or lose my package. Sort of like buying fire insurance from the neighborhood arsonist.

Well there are opportunities along the way for loss, damage, theft, etc. At least by making the coverage optional you aren't paying for a service for those times when you don't really need it.

One to three coins worth about $25K total (5x5 box) now costs about $50 REG mail.

I just returned a a 2.1 k 2011 Platinum Proof to the mint for $24.00 with return receipt by email. Ouch. So that 25k for $50 doesn't sound that bad.

Just sent out a 13 pound plus package insured for 25k, cost me only $59.20. I think registered is by far the best deal available for higher values, but it is a bit slow.
