Picture of a coin

richtreerichtree Posts: 1,501 ✭✭✭
I basically stick in the baseball cards forum, but at one time I was given some coins.

Someone took a look and said I have a 1942/1 dime -- error or whatever you coin guys call it.

So anyways, I have been trying to take a picture but every time a try to really, really zoom up on it my digital camera goes out of focus.

3 cameras, and the same result.

Is there something different I can do to get this up-close

thanks

rich

If you have a 1942/1 take it to a PCGS dealer, submit it for grading and get it TruView'd! image

Look for a mode or setting on your camera that looks like a flower. That is macro mode. Set it to that and give it a try.

And then it'll have a bar at the top that you can zoom to the point that it has a mark set so it stays "green" and that's the maximum zoom where it will still focus. Good luck.

Be sure to post the results of your experiment, because then we can let you know what kinds of adjustments to make. Also, if you list the camera(s) you're using, there may be one better suited than the others for coin pictures.

A picture would be really good, especially if it actually is what you think.... neat coin, I hope it is. Cheers, RickO

Your picture isn't good enough to tell, but it should look like this:

I would say by the pic that it is not a Philly minted merc if it is indeed a 42/1. It could be a Denver mint and better pics would be needed to verify if that is the case.

If you can, take a picture similar to you last pic. But this time make sure to set your camera at max resolution. After you take the picture crop out everything except the area around the date. After cropping see what resolution the remaining cropped image is. If not to big (larger than 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 ish) then go ahead and post that cropped pic. Make sure you keep aspect ratio so as not to "stretch" the image or otherwise mess it up.

There are many free photo editors that do basic cropping, the key is to focus in on that date and crop the rest out.

Oh, and when you are done cropping I am positive your image will not be exactly 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768, the idea is to keep the widest part of the image under 1024 if at all possible. If you have a newer camera and take it "raw" the image can be HUGE, so if needed convert it to a .jpg or .gif and crop it down so that when you post it here it does not take an hour to load image

Good luck and we look forward to seeing more pics if possible.
