A recent purchase...some may consider it a modern

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,790 ✭✭✭✭✭
but I like it anyways image
Pictures aren't mine...they show the detail very nicely but not the luster the coin has...inhand, more of a darker chocolate with luster.

Thoughts?

Being from Mass, that's on my 'must have' list, (so's a Pine Tree Shilling, but maybe after graduation...sigh).

Oh, I LOVE that coin...that's a meaty one....love the cud on the eagle's head!
    I'll come up with something.

When forum member pistareen lectured back at Spring PNNA he mentioned that 1000s of these pieces were brought by Gray when he left New England on his expedition 1787. He brought them to trade with NW natives who prized copper above gold.
That's a good looking piece of historical copper there Bochiman.

It's fairly recent, because the edges are round, and the writing is in a written language. It is, indeed, a coin and not a rock.

The metal contained within was forged perhaps some eleven billion years ago in the furnaces of stellar fusion within the primordial population I stars within the early universe. Only gradually would they coalesce and find their way to the remnants of a great supernova that would gradually coalesce to form the early Solar System, delivered to a molten Earth in a cataclysmic collision with a second celestial body that would disintegrate but in so doing bring about the formation of the Moon. But, the mining of the copper and its refinement by humans is, by comparison, a recent development. In cosmologic time, this coin is very fresh indeed.

We did just have a nice, colorful Polish coin here that was just a little bit older image

Nice coin! Detail on the Indian's head and eagle's wings looks good.

Is the metal blob on top of the eagles head considered a cud, or is it a separate variety?

It's a die break that resembles a horn on the Eagle's head (sort of), and is listed in the Redbook (and thus slabbed by PCGS) as the "Horned Eagle" variety.

Cool!!!! A 1723 Hibernia is on my want list. It's the oldest coin I have found with my metal detector, and I would like a non-dug example.

I've wanted one of those for a long time! Yours looks outstanding with just the right amount of detail vs. circulation.

The "modern" part of the title caught you, eh? image

    No, it isn't raw....it's PCGS'ed and CAC'ed.
