FHP(Florida Highway Patrol): Rare coin collection spills in I-95 rollover

Part of a $1 million coin collection spilled on Interstate 95 Thursday in a rollover crash near New Smyrna Beach, and state troopers warned motorists not to come looking for left-behind treasure.
Demetri Cirillo, 47, called several friends to come pick up the valuable coins before an ambulance rushed him to Halifax Health Medical Center, Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said. He suffered minor injuries.
The 4 p.m. crash just north of State Road 44 left Cirillo's Ford SUV overturned in the center grass median after his rear tire separated, Montes said. When troopers got to the scene, Cirillo told them his vehicle held about $1 million in "rare coins and currency," some of which was scattered along the treeline.
Passenger Dawn Cirillo, 46, was not injured, troopers said. Both Cirillos were wearing seat belts, and Demetri Cirillo was no longer listed as a patient at Halifax later Thursday night.
Both are listed as employees of Florida Currency & Coins in Boca Raton -- Demetri as the store manager, Dawn as the accountant. The store is billed on its website as "Boca Raton's Oldest Coin Shop."
As a warning to anyone who might come looking for coins that weren't retrieved, Montes said stopping along the interstate is only allowed in cases of emergency.

He left his employer's coins on the highway and took off in an ambulance after suffering "minor injuries"? Sorry, Demetri, but my firm is not hiring at the moment.

Long story short. A few years ago an unlicensed, illegal, non-English speaking alien ran a red light and took the front wheel off my motorcycle. I had a 5" cut on one leg and a bruised knee. Someone called 911 since it happened at a busy 4 lane intersection. I told the ambulance I'd drive myself to the ER to get sewed up since I doubted she had insurance. (It happened a half mile from home and my neighbor came down to get what was left of my bike). They argued a lot but I knew they couldn't force me to go. Finally they made me sign a waiver. I went home and made sure my kids knew I was ok and set them up for dinner and then drove to the ER. I decided to stop by my health plan's urgent care since it would probably be quicker. They failed open and sent me to the ER. Walking into the ER you go at the bottom of the list behind all the people coming in ambulances. 4 hours later I walked out with 35 stitches and staples.
I would have done the same thing in this instance and gone to the ER after I got the coins taken care of.

<< <i>Husband... minor injuries taken away in an ambulance; wife... uninjured and remains at the scene of the accident, but he still calls his buddies to pick up the coins.

kryptonite was right , looks like his friends were not there to pick up the coins, a news crew found a suitcase full of dope and two men who claimed they were relatives showed up to pick it up and it was confiscated before they could leave, guess he was trying to avoid the serious jail time that comes with a felony
<< <i>My favorite part is when the local news crew here in central florida found the breifcase full of marajuana along with spilled coins
where does it say that in the news articles?

They likely won't get the coins back if drugs were involved.

I believe they have, in most states, made drug laws broad enough that they can confiscate anything of value that might be associated with the drugs. --Jerry

Has any forum member in the Central Florida area heard any more on the drug aspect of this incident?
