My New Morgan - 1890CC MS

63! So as you know I am a neophite newbie of the nth degree - but thanks to the board I am learning! I still don't really know how to grade, but let me know what you think. In my humble opinion this is almost a 64 or 65 - their is a very slight scratch on the cheek parallel to the nostril under the eye. You can only see it at the right angle and there is a slight nick on the eyebrow - I believe this is what lowered the grade - please let me know if I am correct or if I have to go back to school. The issue you see on the back of the head is reflection, it's clean as clean can be there. Thanks for your input. I apologize for the upside down pics.

Looks properly graded to me. My biggest complaint would be about the upside/down slab. I mean c'mon, a little quality control PCGS.

I did apologize for that, held my mobile phone the wrong way and didn't fee like doing it all again.

What are the reasons for the grade - looking for a little education as currently I only see very minute difference between this and my 91 CC that's MS65 - as a matter of fact the reverse of this one looks much bettter than my 91. Thanks in advance for any insights.image

The photos are not quality enough for offering a grade with any accuracy. I can see the cheek, which carries the most weight and it has somce contact marks and scuffs. Here is an MS65 for comparison.

Coin looks very scuffy on the cheek with lots of grazes and chatter. Can't even see the scratch you mention but it's probably more significant than the grazes.
Don't see this as a 64, never mind a 65. Miss Liberty seems like she was trying to shave blindfolded. It's just a 63. The mottled toning patch on the obverse
at 4:00 doesn't help the eye appeal. But you're right about making your goal about getting really strong candidates for each grade (ie + and CAC coins) without
having to pay any premium for doing so. Morgans are an ideal place for finding hidden pq coins since so few of them have been through the + or CAC mill yet.

If you think this had a shot at MS65, I suggest you slow down you're buying habits until you look at a lot more coins. There should be no hurry as the general market is
going nowhere while you build your war chest. CC dollars are plentiful enough. It's easy to come up to speed on Morgans. Just need to look a few thousand slabs
in various grades. That can be done in a few weeks/months, or even days if you attend a major national convention.

The pics are too blurry to really see enough details to grade accurately. I definately can see it is not a 65.

Cheek looks like it may have lots of little hits rather than one big one, that would make it a more eye appealing 63 in my opinion, but looks to be about right in grade, from what I can tell from the pics.

    image Ow, my neck! image

90-CC in MS63 is a nice addition to any Morgan Set.
How many Morgans do you have?

    currently I have 9

Regarding the marks on the cheek - they are more prevelant on the photo than they are in hand - the coin is actually much cleaner in hand. Although my 81 is my favorite, I'm partial to toning. I have a 1903 raw that has some really cool red/purple toning, that's why I got it - almost looks "rusted", some would call it ugly and I understand - I happen to like it. Picture doesn't do justice you can't really see the red - I need to work with my Cannon instead of my Droid to take some real pictures!
