I can not imagine a Fortune 500 having an open forum like this. Companies at that level REALLY like to control their image.

Since the last purge a few weeks ago I have been sort of depressed about the forum. Maybe we should remember that our sponsor is a lot more open about disagreeable discussion than other publicly traded companies would be. I think they pretty much allow all viewpoints to be communicated as long as the author is respectful & factual.

I don't know of another company that furnishes a Forum where guests can openly speak ill of of their host and get by with it. To me this speaks volumns about the CU. We are for the most part their customers but yes, we are their guests too.

It is their sandbox and we are playing in it. All is fun until some alley cat comes along and takes a big dump in it and the sand is contaminated and none of us wanna play in this sandbox anymore.

These forums are no doubt both a blessing and a thorn to PCGS. Any promotion of the name is a positive, but overdiscussion can result in the reverse happening. The President of the Corporation should NOT have to spend his valuable time reading and deleting posts and banning members. He was NOT hired to do this task.

Sometimes I feel as if there may be a plan to slowly eliminate these forums altogether by diminishing their usefulness by gradually weening out the posters. Maybe the ol paranoid me is just conjuring this up...but to those who are actually seeking information or knowledge cannot ask a question to new member qssfertoppolly that we would ask to Broadstruck.

It does seem like the great actual knowledge base is shifting ATS.

Well Best Buy sucks and they have a forum where you can tell them that and the thread will not disappear. I think they are a fortune 500... I run several forums and by the way I really dislike when a person that runs a forum justifies expenses because of how expensive it is to run a forum. Forum software is cheap and running servers now days is even cheaper. My server can hold 1000 forums and I still pay the same 200 bucks a month. Anyway, I understand that there should always be a degree of gratitude towards the host of a forum, but if they are making policies that are hurting the masses then they need to hear it.

At the end of the day, a banished member stays banished by choice. It is impossible to keep a troll banned from a forum. U ban his account, he registers another, you ban his email he registers with a different email, you ban his ip, he changes his ip. About the only thing constant is that troll always act like a troll, but if you ban people based on posting styles then you end up banning innocents too. I know how it works because I deal with it every day, wait till a nice registration bot decides to target your forum and then the real fun begins image

With that said, my point is that telling someone their policy is wrong should not be grounds for banning someone. The price increase on the pucks comes to mind, not only was it bad for customers, they tried to dress the pig and misrepresent it. It would have been easier to just increase the price and chalk it up to the cost of the hosting of the forum...

By the way, I do enjoy this forum and appreciate everything that it offers, the fact that we all self police says allot about the quality of members that visit here. I am sure I will get a little heat for my post and that is ok, I would not expect any less. I think Bear advice is sound and in an ideal world everyone should follow his guidelines, good post!

My mama always said "if you can't say something nice then keep your mouth shut". In this case I have only nice things to say about the forum. I've gleaned a ton of good information, learned a lot about the personality of collectors and dealers (kind of looking over someones shoulder while they do business). Folks come and go. I read just about every thread but if it's from Bear then I slow down and read it twice the go get a jelly donut and raise it to him!
Thanks to the folks that keep the place going.
Now, if you ever decide to open up the open forum again then I would raise a donut to you too image

I certainly agree. These public forums which rely on typed comments are far too subject to misunderstanding. Cynicism and sarcasm are too easily misconstrued. Vitriol has no place in public forums. There are far too many ways to find something in someone's post with which you can agree, and certainly things about the host.

One need only to think before posting, use discretion when commenting, apply logic and diplomacy to posts/comments, and there is nothing to fear. Cheers, RickO

THere is a polite way to disagree and still keep the discussion honest. Wild unsupported and libelous statements should not be part of this forum.

On the other hand, if someone has a strong opinion on grading standards or the introduction of + grades, etc, then prohibiting that discussion would turn this forum into one giant advertisement and would not serve the hobby or the young people who are trying to learn as much as they can here.

Good point, I'll have to remember this as it tends to let my fingers type things I may quickly wish to edit.

It's too bad that instead of getting banned permantly CU can't just put them on a probationary time out period. Kind of like a 1,2,3 strikes you're out rule with a warning after 1 & 2.
It is not that life is short, but that you are dead for so very long.
  • I am a relative newcomer to this forum. I have not found it necessary to use it that often, however, I read it EVERY DAY. If I have something worthwhile (positive) to contribute, I do so. Rather, I enjoy the exchange of wealthy information, education and sometimes humor woven into many replies. I have found it rewarding to note alerts about the many scams that occur, particularly on the web. I believe the value of this forum is , many times, overlooked. It is convenient these days to express your opinion without retribution. However, this forum does have its rules and we must abide by them. Your opinions DO have weight. However, when it targets the reputation of either the poster or the author of the entire forum, it serves NO purpose and nothing educational is exchanged............IMO
