2009 UHR Gold

  • It has extra meaning for me as I once visited the Smithsonian a few years back and was able to hold and study the two original pattern pieces and photographed them with my digital camera. I had no inkling that the Mint would ever use the format of a double $10 gold planchet size to make such a piece in quantity for collectors.

What I wouldn't give to see those originals in hand but since you did I have to ask. In comparison to the 2009 UHR how deep is the field of $10 piece? Is it anything close to the 2009 in depth and the same with the Relief is the 2009 a higher relief or about the same? Thanks...

Update: I just received regrades on my 3 UHR.. One got an PL69.. I knew one of them at least would..image
  • I bought one the first day and had it graded PCGS 70 FS. It is my favorite coin and I hopefully will never sell it.

Perhaps even expect a higher price in the next week or so, once the editor finishes reviewing the most recent prices realized!!

    Spiff,

I don't recall the difference in depth of the original patterns to what the 2009 model is. The originals don't have the proof-like quality and have been handled and likely have some hairlines. I went to look at barber halves and Richard Doty was kind enough to show me some of the really neat and special holdings they have. The coins were very neat and did have a lot of depth.

For those who don't know it, the Smithsonian is meant to be a place to go and study, not just a museum to walk through and see a very small percentage of the holdings. Due to necessary security, it is necessary to arrange a visit in advance, but unless they have changed the philosophy, anyone can make arrangements to go in and look at any of the numismatic (or other) holdings. I highly encourage anyone so interested to give it a try.

I bought one also when they were issued at the original price of $1189. I absolutely love this coin and it is one of my favorites. But with that being said it really irks me that with the mint it's hit or miss on the overall quality that you receive. My coin is beautiful (I haven't taken a loupe to it) but the mahagony box that it came in on does not lock into place when I close it. I know that I can buy another one on the secondary market, but that's not the point. I will continue to buy from the mint, but I sure do hope they can get it together on the quality issues overall.

was able to acquire one, the presentation is amazing! The mint really outdid itself on it. Love it!

  • Question regarding current CC special for 3-for-2 Secure Plus.

I have 3 UHRs - 2 MS70 and one MS69 that were graded prior to PL designation way back in 2009.

Can I resubmit them under current CC SP special to get re-evaluated for PL designation?

Would it be regrade? Also will they keep their current grades if they are not PL ?

  • Actually I think the anwere is here but not sure about PL

    http://www.pcgs.com/secureplusfaq.html

    59. Q: If I send my PCGS coins in to have them put into the new Secure Plus holder, can my coins be downgraded? And to get them into a Secure Plus holder, do they need to be sent in for Regrade or can it be done through Reholder?

DW: The rules for PCGS Secure Plus are no different than for Standard grading. Coins sent in via Regrade are guaranteed not to go down. Coins sent in via Reholder are guaranteed not to go down. You can submit any PCGS-holdered coin – either Standard label or Secure Plus - to the other service via Regrade or Reholder under the exact same rules. The only service where you can receive a + grade is PCGS Secure Plus.

Yes if you send them in for regrade they will be checked for the PL designation but as you know PCGS is VERY strict so getting the PL would definitely be some luck. I have 2 MS 69 and both definitely look like PL. One got the PL and the other didn't. The funny thing is, is that I think the one that didn't get the PL looks more PL then the one that did LOL..
A reholder would only mean there be put into new slabs and not being graded. So if your wanting them to check if there PL then go with the secure plus REGRADE..

My UHRs all developed red spots after 69 grading. Got rid of 'em.

Pure gold should not be developing any spots let alone red spots? Only 22K (copper mixed alloy) coins tend to have those.. Do you have any pics of them?

Interesting, my UHR did develop a freckle as well. I'll see if I can track down a pic.

Pure gold always has impurities, and yes my gold buffalos had red spots. No pics, they were sold.

Red Spot looks like my 2008-W 4 piece Buffalo uncirculated with the same condition.

Poor quality control, I no longer buy .9999 gold US Mint crap. Some other mints treat the contamination issue more seriously.

Where did the blanks come from for the buffalos? They came from australia for the UHR ?

Maybe they send us their rejects? Otherwise, a sliver particle may adhere to the planchet during some stage of mint production as the result of cross contamination.

Discoloration does not surface (pun intended) until later. Similar discoloration as seen on older $20 saints. No discount on the Saints, they're still worth $20. image

Maybe the affected coins are not completely 24k.
