Which Magnifiers do you recommend?

Ok, so these tired old eyes of mine are really giving me a hard time lately. lol Any recommendations on a GREAT magnifier that I would fall in love with and never look back? What your preference?

Is there any that sit on a table top with lights? Or is it better with a hand held?

I was able to pick up a few loupes on ebay for not a lot of money , glass lenses 10x and 16x , be careful of description as some are plastic lenses. Most household magnifiers are adequate for general use though, any hobbyshop will have them on the counter.

If you like 10X magnification, as I do....go to www.surplusshed.com and look up the unmounted Hastings Triplet. This is small, a little over 1/2 inch around and maybe 3/8 inch thick. gently rounded. I keep one always in my pocket ....and you dont even know its there. Really handy when you get a very worn wheatie in the Wa wa. This is the optic found inside most quality loupes. Just a LOT smaller unmounted. $15 as I recall...

I have a loupe a diamond dealer gave me when he bought a new, better one. It is only good for the most detailed, extreme, magnification like looking for elusive evidence of a doubled die by looking at one numeral of the date. Normally I have a halogen bankers lamp and a cheap magnifying glass. I never use the glass until I've taken a good look at the coin with my naked eyeball. But the best, most accurate, magnification is examining a good photo of a coin. image

I have several magnifiers---B&L's, Zeiss's, and a few el cheapos.

X2....for a pocket mag, these two are the absolute best. The Zeiss gives more accurate color.

For a desk top, the Eschenbach aplanatics are excellent. 2888-50 is almost 5X. They have edge to edge clarity, and are just a pleasure to use.

    I really like those.

Does anyone know what magnification does a grader at PCGS use when grading submitted coins is it 5X, 10X? Thanks,

The 5x Eschenbach model 1177 is ideal for grading ... but it sure has gone up in price since I bought mine new for about $32 in the early 1990's!

Zeiss or Eschenbach..... I have the Zeiss and it is incredible. Having used magification devices (loupes, glass, scopes) over many years in business and hobbies, I can assure you these are top quality glass. Buy cheap, buy often, eventually get a good product. Cheers, RickO
