Did anyone happen to preview that coin? That was the one Buffalo price that jumped off the page.

    Here it is:

    1923-S

This one also sold recently. Not nearly as well struck but better color.

    1923-S

Would you pay 3x for the well struck piece? Interesting....

Allure of the ogh and I dont think CAC has stickered that many 65's implying that a "true" 65 is significantly harder to find

I think you are right about all of those things. I also think the coin looks like it has a hammered strike, but for a relatively toneless example, that price is almost triple what the other stickered 23-S in MS65 went for in 2009. I would love to think Buffalos are waking back up but I suspect it was more an example of two people really wanting a specific coin.

Wow, that is a nice hammered coin. $20k is also nice and hard to let go
on a 23s. But, hey, it's a tough coin to find above 64.

Just takes two bidders, doesn't it?
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

CAC has only stickered 2 1923-S Buffs in 65, none higher have received stickers, and PCGS has only graded 2 MS 66s. While $20k+ seems very high, if a couple of people want one of the finest 1923-S Buffs in existence, it could be awhile before another chance comes along.

    This.

I hope Cape comments on this thread. He knows a nice Buff when he sees one.

  • Nice coin but it looks like they are buying labels and plastic.

100% full strike. Not unheard of for this date but very unusual. This series has long been under appreciated value wise for well struck or fully struck coins of many of the tougher dates IMO.

After looking at the large image I must amend my comments to 99% fully struck. There's a slight area of weakness on the rim and tail at 3:00 on the reverse. Still, it's an exceptional example. A more commonly encountered problem with most of the Branch Mint coins from 1919 thru 1935 is the use of badly worn dies rather than an actual deficiency of the strike.

Maybe it's a numbers game, but that is a beautiful buff (the HA example, not the rusty Bowers coin).

I don't know guys, that coin is a beaut! Certainly better than most 65's for the date/mm.

I like the coin but 3x price guide is not for me. I've done 2x price guide for a coin and that was borderline psych-ward. I've paid PLUS money for non-PLUS but CAC'd coins. I just don't see 3x price guide for it. The person obviously has a lot of disposable income and just plain wanted it no matter what. It will be interesting to see if this coin goes up for sale again in the next 5 years for a loss of 10K.

I don't know this series but perhaps the new owner is hoping for an upgrade due to the sharp strike, old green holder, and CAC sticker. image

Well , I'm just back from Central states.... I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HAMMER PRICE, I dropped out at 17,500 bid .. plus the juice. This coin was no doubt the finest 23s that I'd ever seen. It looked like a 21 P..... as far as strike goes. I've got to say nice buffalo's are selling for great prices ! I am happy to say that Heritage images really stink as I was able to pay upwards of 3k and got the 1917d ms65 in green holder .... this coin belongs in a 66+ holder. I sold a 1927s in 65 and a 1924s in 65........ both of these coins sold well over bid!!!! image

Thanks, Ed, for weighing in -- I had a suspicion you were either the bidder or underbidder on the 23-S.

I would also agree that Heritage has a tough time imaging Buffalo's.

Thanks for sharing this with us cape. Do you know if it was you and another bidder taking this up to the top or wee their others? Are you going to submit it for a plus?

As far as the 23s is concerned there appeared to be 3 bidders........ Two on the phone along with myself in the room. I really believe this is the finest known example out there! Great coins sell for great money!

That could be tricky considering he didn't win the coin... image
