Early New Orleans "Mini" Type Set

Just thought I'd share:

Not the highest of grades, but I bet there are a lot of stories in these coins!

  • I am from New Orleans so I am quite fond of the O minted coins. Those are very nice coins. I hope to have a 1839-O half dollar as nice as yours one day.

They look great displayed side by side like that. Any other plans to add to the set?

I think that ultimately I'd like to have the first-year of issue for each denomination from New Orleans, with a few exceptions (namely the 1838-o Reeded Half, et al).

The 1839-O Half will need to do in lieu of the 1838-O Half.

You do not have to have a high grade set to have a cool set! Nice!

    Thanks Everyone...

I intend to be patient (I'll need to be) and I'll probably complete in this order:

    Quarter
    Gold Dollar
    Half Dime
    Silver Dollar
    Half Eagle
    Eagle
    Double Eagle

I have the 1851-O Trime (only year of issue) in AU-55, but it's not pictured here.

I may substitute the 1842-O Eagle for the 1841 issue (it looks like it could be pricey and hard to find).

I would take it one step further and get the 43-O $10. Also, the 51-O $20 is considerably more available and somewhat less expensive than the 50-O $20.

    Thanksfor the heads-up, RYK!

I'll definitely consider that approach when I start looking at those denominations...

If this is to be a "12-coin set" for presentation purposes, one omission that I made in the above list is the 1854-O Three Dollar Gold, the only year of issue for this denomination.

I think it can be had reasonably priced in F-12/15 condition, if one ever becomes available. And that would dovetail with the "crusty" look of this set.

In lieu of the 1854-O Three Dollar Gold, another thought that I had is to include one coin as a "last year of issue" from the New Orleans mint. Candidates are:

    1909-O Half Eagle
    1904-O Silver Dollar
    1909-O Half Dollar
    1909-O Quarter
    1909-O Dime

Probably the most interesting from the last year of issue is the 1909 Half Eagle. It seems to be available and reasonably priced in a matching set grade.

I'd love to hear other ideas on how to complete this set!

Nice, crusty old look to those coins.

That looks like a neat set and with a little patience, it should be quite feasible to complete. The coins that you have chosen so far are quite nice looking and original. As you strive to complete your set, don't compromise on quality no matter what grade you choose.

    Fantastic! Love that 39-O (half)

You could look for an 1838-O half dime, but that is a very scarce coin in decent condition. (e.g. VF or better)

BTW That is a very nice and interesting set! image

    Thanks!

I'm sure that there will be many twists and turns and some frustrations, misses, and long waits along the way but I think it will be fun...

It's physical form will likely be somewhat different, but if it ends up being a twelve-piece set its virtual representation will be something like this (sans titles):

    image

I already know which holes these coins will fill above...

    image

My current thinking has these (12) coins forming the set:

    Row 1
    1851-O Trime
    1838-O Half Dime
    1838-O Dime

    Row 2
    1840-O Seated Quarter
    1839-O Reeded Half
    1846-O Seated Dollar

    Row 3
    1849-O Liberty Gold Dollar
    1839-O Classic Head Quarter Eagle
    1854-O Indian Three Dollar

    Row 4
    1840-O Liberty Half Eagle
    1842-O Liberty Eagle
    1850-O Liberty Double Eagle

The top two rows would be the silver issues and the bottom two rows would be gold.

I might be convinced to add another row or two based on suggestions that I'm hearing from folks...

Its not so much a weak strike as it is a relapping of the reverse die. Maybe twice! 1849 O Gold dollars were workhorse coins, many are very worn.

I think the 46-O $1 is overrated. If I were you, I'd get a 50-O instead. Too bad the 51-O doesn't apply here.

That's a really nice set- those coins look amazingly well-matched at least in the pictures.
