How do you feel about your also-ran coins?

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,560 ✭✭✭✭✭
Presumably, you've selected coins for your collection based on how much they appeal to you. You like all of your coins.

But now that we have stickers and pluses and stars (oh my!), how do you feel about your coins that were not deemed worthy of this extra affirmation?

Do you have coins that you submitted but that did not receive a sticker or + or star?

Do these also-ran coins still appeal to you?

I like some of my coins a lot more than others. Opinions change with time and greater experience and exposure.

I don't do stickers, and consider a plus (or a star) nice but non-essential to enjoyment of an exceptional coin.
My own opinion is the most important to me at the end of the day.

The answer to your final question would be a resounding yes.

Larissa and Larsen are trying to gather the best coins they can find/afford for their birthyear mint sets (for the Registry). All other coins are purchased for enjoyment (raw for albums) or for eye appeal (slabs). Aside from their birthyear sets, grades of the coins and grades on the slabs are not considered.

If someone points out a problem that I missed, once I know about it, the problem usually grows in mind. Ultimately, I usually sell the coin. If it is just a difference of grading opinion, and I like the coin, I keep it.

I find it mentally easier to part with a coin that 'didnt sticker'.

I have TWO CAC 67FB Mercs that I darn near paid + money for....I thought these were sure bets for a + since I have looked at a ton of 67FB Mercs over the past year. I sent them, in their holders, to PCGS for a possible upgrade to 67+FB. They both came back 67FB and I of course lost my pretty green stickers. image

I still look at the coins the same way...wondering why the heck they aren't in 67+FB Holders. I look at myself as an idiot trying to play the registry game though. I doubt I will do that again. They appeal to me the exact same way. I would not change my purchase decisions because I think they are beautiful for their grade...if I ever go to sell them in 20-30 years I might send them back to get little green stickers assuming that service still exists. The market will price them for what they are just as when I bought them at auction...darn near plus money. image

  • An MS63 that is not an MS63 +, *, CAC, Zofo, or John Bonham triple circle is still an MS63. And, even if it's just barely MS63, that's still at least in theory better than an MS62, even with various qualifiers added. So, no, I still love my failed regrades. I liked them when they came in, so I see no reason to demote them just because they weren't upgraded to the top of their class. They're still in the class.

  • Yes, they appeal to me because (for me) there is more to a coin than it's grade.

Having said that, I will change the focus of my collection from time to time, and I will either neglect or sell the coins that do not fit in with the new focus.

I still like mine, dreck or not. Sure there are some I would like to upgrade but it might be years before I find the right candidate.

This is a risky and possibly controversial thread topic. But I do NOT want this to become a PCGS or + bashing thread in any way.

The collector's opinion of his/her also-ran coins is an interesting topic, to me anyway.

That opinion will effect the market in some as yet unforseen way.

Will the status of these coins compared to other coins in your collection weigh on your mind until you eventually sell them?

Are you more willing to sell these coins at a loss?

Are you willing to resubmit these coins repeatedly until you're convinced they have no shot at a sticker, plus or star?

Are you content with your original opinion of the coin regardless of the lack of extra affirmation?

Do you collect coins that are so specialized/esoteric that these extra affirmations are meaningless to you?

To address your follow-up questions, I would say that I am not especially concerned about the grades, but I am concerned about problems that I may have missed (and often the graders have missed). When I am alerted to a problem that I did not detect when I purchased the coin, it may cause me to lose interest in the coin and sell it. It may not.

I would never sell a perfectly decent coin that was not CAC-worthy on the basis of being overgraded. In fact, I have knowingly purchased coins that I felt were overgraded and will continue to do so, so long as they fit my collection and the price is right.

I did a lot of pruning over the last three years. Everything I was unhappy with went away. I'm sure it was terribly unprofitable. But I am now at peace with everything I own.

Most aren't CAC'd or plussed or starred. I bought them before that was the rave. Occasionally I ask my self if I shouldn't regrade everything, and/or ship them to JA. And then I get distracted by something new.

Of the seven coins that I've submitted to C@C, the one that didn't sticker was and remains one of my favorites- an 1840 $10 in PCGS XF45 plastic. I don't know what's "wrong" with it or why it didn't sticker, it is somewhat abraded and the surfaces are a bit cloudy, so maybe it's got some goo on it. One of my goals is to eventually get someone to tell me what's not right about the coin.

To me there would be huge value-added in the service if they'd give you a line or two telling you why your coin "isn't C@C"- not because I want to argue but because I want to learn.

I am content with my original opinion. I have several PCGS '+' and dozens of CAC'd coins, all purchased with the designations on the slabs. I have ca. 100 more PCGS/NGC slabs that were purchased before these designations existed, and feel no urge to submit them for green beans or re-slabbing as '+' because they are not for sale anytime soon. I also have cracked several dozen coins out of their PCGS slabs (ca. 8-9 had CAC green beans too), and they sit in a 7070 album.

Why all the fuss? In another 10-15 years or so, the TPGs will roll out yet another grade (++, perhaps?) and maybe I will have my coins regraded at that time. But not now--I have seen more than a few 'also-ran' coins in top-tier slabs with fancy designations and stickers. I'll wait and see what the future brings.

The only also-ran coins I have are those, looking back on them, that I shouldn't have bought in the first place. On one, I bought the best of twenty unattractive coins for the grade that I saw that day. A second one was a coin I got so I wouldn't get stuck with sales tax on the purchase of a more expensive, nicer coin. One a third one, I missed a hairline scratch on Miss Liberty's jaw, etc. etc.

I am not concerned about the holder, or whether the coin has a sticker or plus, etc. I've seen enough coins to know that people grade coins, and that people make mistakes.

My also-ran coins were the ones I sold at auction over the last several years.

They did not sticker and I agreed that they should not have stickered. They were very low end for the grade or even overgraded.

They infiltrated my collection over a 25 year period as part of sets I purchased so I acquired a few bad with the good I picked up.

    It happens.

One of the major exception is a coin (shown below) I picked up a while back. It is simply awesome but it did not sticker because of that single big bag mark in the field. The toning spot was not considered a negative because after all, it was a circulated coin! LOL.

All of my coins have been sent to CAC in several submission over a period of months. By the time I sent the last group to CAC I was reasonably certain which coins would pass and fail.

The experience taught me that I had purchased many coins that were properly graded but were low end for the grade.

So far I have not resubmitted any coins for a + grade.

All those that did not sticker I have since sold. I am happy with the thinned out remainder.

I feel good. I just can't see sending in a coin after it's graded to see if it was or is a MS-65.7 if thats the case make it a MS-66 and stop jerking with me and my $$$ that is why I sent it to you in the 1st place now do your job and graded it right and give me the + / star or what ever with my grading service. Thats not to much to ask for. image
