How is a Coin Graded Unc Details?

RichRRichR Posts: 3,978 ✭✭✭✭✭

What's the difference between an altered or improperly cleaned slabbed coin and an "Unc Details" coin? How does a TPG arrive at that verdict?

And next, for the right price...have you bought an Unc details coin?

I have bought some of the shipwreck conserved coins with salt water damage and corrosion, but they were clearly stlill unc in every way. I cant remember what the NGC holder said, but the auction disribed then as unc detailsimage

Im not shure there would alway be a difference between cimp. cleaned and UD. Can altered coins even be slabbed?

Depends on the TPG... PCGS places the coin in a Genuine holder without grade; NGC places a coin in an UNC Details holder offering a net grade.

Yes, ANACS slabs the DCarr 1964-D Peace dollars... I think they'd qualify as an altered coin.

  • Unc details just means the coin is uncirculated albeit not problem free.

So then my next question would be...have you ever cracked out an Unc Details coin, resubmitted and achieved a regular grade?

I only ask because the logic that goes into an Unc Details verdict (vs. improperly cleaned or altered) seems somewhat subjective/nebulous.

It did not have to circulate to be AT, or over dipped, cleaned, etc.
And no I would not buy one.
Added that the main reason is that our host don't grade coins that way and I buy primarly PCGS coins.

The coin has full Mint State sharpness, but the surfaces have been altered to a point where the coin can't be called Mint State. From a technical viewpoint a coin with altered surfaces can’t be graded Mint State, but it’s a reasonable way to describe the amount of detail that the coin shows.

In theory, a coin submitted to NCS for conservation should always be slabbed in a Details (NGC) or Genuine (PCGS) slab. However, coins going to NCS have been slabbed in NGC slabs. Yes, conserved coins can be slabbed in regular slabs (but probably not SecurePlus slabs).

This one has a teeny bit of damage. Otherwise, a beauty.
