Well you asked, To be honest the problem with problem coins is that that one person might payup because they are looking for that very coin but the avg collector just looking for type will pass on it the problems prevent the coin from being sexy to make someone spontaneously buy it unless it is VERY cheep relative to problem free value. That being said I don't mind problems as much as others on the board and even I find that coin to not do anything for me and I suspect many feel the same. I would price it at 995$ in a dealers case and take the first offer close. Your only hope for more would be in a busy large cent auction with a couple of interested parties.

IMHO there's no harm in asking, yet if it's tossed on the BST a few days later then it's pre-promotional spam.

Problem coins no matter how unique are the only region of this hobby that I've taken some major lumps on.

On average by the time I find someone that loves it too I've lost 1/3 what I paid for them to free me of my problem by happily cutting me a check.

Will not be for sale on the BST. Considering what corroded examples are going for, I dont think there will be an issue selling this for more than what I paid.

I think you're underestimating how tough it really is to sell problem coins. I agree with the $995 asking price and taking the first offer within 30%. You're going to sit on it for longer than you think.

Just from my personal experience when you sink good money into something bad, next time it sets sail there's normally an ice berg in it's path.

I genuinely wish you the best of luck and hope your able to get out and even make a profit.

As I honestly get knots in my stomach whenever I see you post an issue newp chuck of copper or gold on the boards.

This is not the time to be buying problem coins. Whenever I bought them in the past because they were a "good deal" I always lost money when it came time to sell. The people who buy problem coins want them to be cheap, cheap, cheap.

Remember, it's not just the graffiti. It periphery of the obverse/rims has been unnaturally carved out (or something).

Based on the link provided to the previous thread, it appears you paid $1035 for the coin in an auction five months ago. Meaning- of all the people who saw the item in the auction, you were willing to pay the most. So- unless you know of interested buyers who were not aware of the coin when it was for sale last year, I would think you'd be fortunate to get anywhere close to what you paid if you tried to sell the coin today.

    But then, that's just me...

There is the possibility that having the coin in a PCGS Gen holder might add some marketability (and $$$). I have certainly seen it happen, but do not expect it for this coin.

Most who are in the market for a 93 cent know it is real so the up side of a Gen holder is the holder itself and the fact a gen holder only lists one problem which helps that coin because it has lots of them. It looks bent, spooned, recolored plus Graffiti to me with a little porosity thrown in for good measure and if it wasn't a 179* something it would be in a junk box.

Tough issue, but it's still a problem piece. If I have $1000 to pony up for a problem piece, I'd gladly pay twice that for a slabbed problem free one...

Oh I know. I also sold the 1800 $5 ANACS AU55 I bought from heritage last year. The 1810 is a PCGS XF45 CAC. nice & crusty!
Also bought a 1847D PCGS XF40 CAC gold sticker.

Regardless, I have no problem keeping the Wreath. If I can't sell for a profit, I'll keep it.

The details on this one that just sold at stacks might be better, but I would prefer my example instead. This sold for $2300 including BP.

    Stacks Wreath Cent

"looks bent, spooned, recolored plus Graffiti to me with a little porosity thrown in for good measure and if it wasn't a 179* something it would be in a junk box."

Its not bent or recolored actually. A little porosity, yes. Spooned? The wear is uneven probably from the rims being hammered in or from being a pocket piece.

It is not bent but it's hammered instead?!? I have heard of ownership adding a point but you're in a little bit of denial and I don't think anyone would think that the original skin is still on that coin. I also do not think your coin is really comparable to the stacks coin which is a higher grade and only has one, more acceptable (to classic copper collectors) problem. There is a big difference to a classic corroded copper and one the was mutilated and more of a slick anyway.

The coins are not comparable, and the market has spoken. The recently sold Stack's example is at least twice as desirable as yours, but neither coin would be welcome in my collection.

The saying buy the best example you can afford comes to mind...

Yet budget wise if an acceptable is out of reach, it's best to halt and come to grips that pricing wise you've missed the boat.

Thankfully there are plenty of other series that are more budget friendly then early large cents.

What always bit me with problem coins is that when I did decide to sell them I sold them at what I thought was a deal just to be rid of them and made sure the buyer understood and saw the problem. BUT often the buyers will come back later saying they hated it after they looked closer then I was left with the dilemma of to keep the buyer happy either taking it back and finding another buyer or further greasing the skids after already selling it at what I thought was a deal just to be rid of it. In the end if I got rid of them at a small loss I was glad to move on. Problem coins are prone to buyers remorse.

I would pay $300 or $400 dollars for it. I know that's low, and I'm not trying to make you mad, but I value problem coins much lower than most. I don't mind having rare ones, but I will not pay as much as most. I figure if the coin has problems it should be priced as a PO-1, and I wouldn't pay more than $500 for one of those unless it was tryly special.

The best way to sell a coin like that is in a major auction and just hope that at least two collectors have a serious interest in owning your coin.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

In my opinion, there is a much, much greater tolerance for coins with problems or issues which were not intentionally inflicted.

A coin which has been spooned, on the other hand, will be shunned by many prospective buyers, as will one with graffiti on it. This coin has both, which does not make it valueless, but it does shrink the pool of possible buyers considerably. It certainly looks recolored to me, as well.

I just wouldn't stretch for a problem wreath...it's psychological. The same coin as a cap or a chain I'd be all over, but a wreath is just"meh". No offense intended.

If this coin was offered in dealers case or on a website at $1,000 or more, I would expect it to sit for a long time.

If it was placed in an auction unreserved it might bring $400 - 600.

If in an auction reserved at $975, you might find someone to hit the bid button, but I believe the strongest thing this would have going for it is the previous auction record.

Here's my Wreath in a PCGS gen holder. I purchased in July of 2009, and I love it. Ankur, your obverse obviously has more detail than mine...and a date. Only a small part of the three in mine can be imagined. For reference, I paid $1300 for two summers ago, but she's not going anywhere anytime soon. I still think about cracking her out from time to time.

I like your coin better because it appears that it was not intentionally harmed. OTOH, my feeling is that if you can afford a coin for $1300, why not wait until you can spend $2600 (or whatever) because I think that you can get a coin that is more than twice as attractive for less than twice the money (if that makes any sense).

When I opened the thread and read the OP, my first reaction was "$750". Maybe a bit higher in an EAC dealers case.

I think you will find the market view as follows: The reverse dig in the form of an H -- clearly intentional -- just kills the value. More than corrosion, more than wear.

That's not to say it's not a cool coin -- it is a Wreath after all! -- but rather that's just how I would candidly evaluate the coin.
