New Pretty CONDER TOKENS (ADDED: BACKGROUND STORIES)!

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,495 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just got these back from NGC and had Todd photograph them in Sacramento! These are some of the prettiest and interesting Conder tokens I've acquired so far, some of which are pretty scarce or rare as well.

I know a little about Conders, I sold a few my Dad brought back from England in a cigar box after WWII.

I've seen your other Conders, now you post these, Holy Moly! Very Nice.

    Interesting. Thanks for posting them.

    But why is the D&H 1057 a "Denton's" and not a "Dunstan's"?

It's a mule of two different dies as the Denton Three Blockheads is a primary obverse die.

How many different ones do you have now? You must have quite the collection of them by now. It seems you purchase at least a few new ones each week. Very nice

All of my Conders are posted on my website here: Charmy's Conder Tokens

And I usually pick up some at the major shows, but certainly not every week!

    Thanks Jack, you're a sweetie!

The stories behind the designs of many of the Conder tokens are fascinating, funny, and often very political in nature. I found the following stories on a couple of the ones I posted above:

The D&H 332A is a satirical portrayal of the head of George III conjoined to that of a patient ass, the British Public. Oddfellows were members of a society organized for social or benevolent purposes.

The heads on the obv of D&H 1095A represents William Pitt, the tory Prime Minister - the one facing left displays the horns of a devil's accolyte and the left is the smiling countenance the prime minister presented to the world. The legend refers to Evenfellows balancing Oddfellows with Evenfellows also representing the two faces of Pitt being equally deceptive (the smile and satanic leer).
