So a Neighbor of my Mother-In-Law gives her this -

For me to look at and find out what its worth. Well, I can't make heads or tails of it image

In looking thru Heritage Archives, I found the same design (in silver only) listed as a so-called dollar - but this piece is much larger than a silver dollar - it measures 50mm in diameter. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's how it arrived -

It's out of the bag - looks to be an original holder (cardboard/thin wood)

The flip side & Inside of holder (blue velvet) -

Then close ups of each side (changed the WB on Camera for obverse photo) -

Any/all help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Chuck

No idea on what it might be, but it is cool, looks to be the original packaging as well.

Is it gold, do you think?

Sweet. This medal was produced in several finishes and several sizes. Off the top of my head: 28, 36, and 50 mm, each in bronze, gilt bronze, and white metal. I might be a bit off on the specifics, but that's close.

I would expect to see this sell in the ~$200 range on eBay, although the box is unusual and could bump it a bit higher.

Look here, it's a Liberty Head dollar. Go about 3/4 down the page

They come in 6 different types & various sizes as was mentioned.

Thanks - Yep, that's it - the second listing is the exact piece, but this one is about half that size. Keets confirmed that it is gilt, and from the color of that example, this one is definitely gilt, not bronze.

So the value is probably in the $200-300 range, I suppose I can tell them......although having he original packaging is pretty neat.

    Thanks everybody.

It sure had me stumped - I mentioned to keets in a PM that it reminded me of a Swiss or German shooting festival Thaler - with such high relief and the large size. Then I see in the reference link that it was sculpted by a German - figures!

I have not seen one before. It is really cool! The reverse is amazing - exceptional 3rd dimension - feels like you can tell where everyone is standing relative to everyone else. Impressive work!
