Given its age and that it's not too terribly beat up for a what it is, I think it's fine where it is. Would I buy it if I were in the market for a 1796 quarter in Fair? Probably not. I'm willing to spend the extra time to find one with better color.

I have a 1819 Large 9 in a PCGS F-12 just as ugly, if not more, so I say on its own merits.
She is more uglier and colorful in person.
Edit for pictures and I think I got her because on night long ago, a Corona and lime night someone convinced me that large 9's were were dar more rare, such as 20-30% were only large 9's and they were sleepers.

not sure why they still use this cartoon crap for their auctions.
how can you say that while thinking the TrueViews are good representations of anything?? the OP Quarter looks more "real" to me than most of those other lame attempts to show a coin's best attributes even though i accept that it is almost certainly darker in-hand.
Given the low grade of the piece, the fact that it is probably AT does not matter. The coin is a filler, PERIOD.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
what's up with the AT assertion?? i'd be willing to bet that in-hand the coin looks almost devoid of color, mostly just dark black/brown, with the intense lighting responsible for any tone being visible. why would someone AT a coin like this??
If I ordered your coin raw as an AG-3, I would keep it. MOO TD

I agree with the AG3 grade. Do you think it was silently net graded down to FR2 due to problems?

Who knows? The reverse is a bit weak, but the obverse is solid. Perhaps it is slightly less than flat? TD

I think it's probably sitting in the right holder. I'm sure the color is strange because of the photography more than the coin itself. The scratches are ok for the grade. I don't like them, but I think the lighting makes them pop a lot more than they likely do in hand. I think if we were discussing a coin in hand, most people would agree with me.
Regarding Baseballabs coin. I've seen it in hand...it's an AG, more so than most AG's on the market. I think he should send it to CAC, it will gold sticker for sure!

Looks fine for the grade to me.
Bowers can take really good high rez images for their web store, not sure why they still use this cartoon crap for their auctions.

No such thing as a filler with 6,146 mintage, with perhaps 650 surviving in any condition.
Here's one listed on Ebay for comparison, Looks to me that it's the once owned Dale Ayers coin.
