Selling Coins question

I used to sell on ebay and was doing quite well until paypal ruined evertyhing. I had mentioned this in an earlier post and based on the answers I got from the members here, it is my fault, I deserve everything I get, etc. Now that I got that out of the way, I was wondering if anyone can give me advice or a recommendation on where I can sell my precious metals. I have several 1 ounce Platinum eagles, silver eagles and gold eagles. I live in NYC. Are there any precious metal dealers in my area where I can walk in and sell these coins?

Victor

Sell them on the BST or to one of the bigger national/international PM dealers. Why limit yourself to your local area?

APMEX are honest and give fair prices buy/sell.

If you are willing to travel to northern NJ, you can sell them at the first-Sunday-of-the-month coin show in Parsippany or you can sell them at the four-times-a-year coin show in White Plains or you can sell them to one of the board members here who are coin dealers in the metropolitan NYC area.

There are serveral members with buy lists on the BST for those type of items most of the time. Wondercoin comes to mind off the top of my head.

There are several big bullion dealers in NYC. Jules J Karp comes to mind, Stack's now does bullion also, there should be at least 10 major dealers in NYC, maybe 25. There's probably not $1 difference across them, but call a few and check.

  • Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about selling to APMEX. I have both graded and raw coins. I also just signed up for Moneybookers so I should be back up and running on ebay. I used to sell on ebay with 100% positive feedback and well over 500 transactions. A few members here stated that my track record was "suspicious" because my listings were private. Even though I found that comment inapropriate, I still value the opinions of the members here. In fact, thanks to this board, I have made some very good investment choices with precious metals.

The amount of knowledge on this board is awesome. I was a coin collecting rookie back in 2006 who had never even held a gold coin in his hand. I learned a lot about mint marks "W" "P", and about Uncirculated and Proof coins. I am mostly a "lurker" in here. I rarely post because I feel that I can contribute very little due to my lack of experience and I must admit a lot of you are judgemental and it can actually be intimidating for a guy like me.

I called Stacks a while back and they will only pay bullion prices for "modern crap". I called them on the phone and they considered a Proof buffalo to be a "bullion coin".

    Thanks for the advice guys.

There are two things you should be aware of before plunging back in:

    a) Nobody uses Moneybookers
    b) You'll end up getting negs and deadbeats from dimwit buyers who didn't bother to read that you don't accept PayPal.

Open new accounts and get back to ebay. This time do it by the book.

The problem isn't with his eBay account. It's PayPal. If he attempts to open a new PayPal account, they'll simply shut him down.

That's because it actually IS simply a bullion round. That doesn't mean that other collectors (and some dealers) won't pay a premium over bullion for it, but don't expect dealers who don't make a market in this area to do so.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

You might want to contact Modern Coin Mart or Scotsmans for the graded coins. Which 1 oz. Plats do you have?image

  • Victor, I sold half of my silver eagles yesterday to APMAX . They paid me 39.57 for each one of them. I sold them 150 coins. I aso sold them 9 Englehards for 37 and change and 25 silvertownes for 38 and change. I will never know if I could have gotten more for them somewhere else but I am happy with what I got. If you like send me a PM and I will give you a tel. # and the extension to the guy I did business with. Also, someone on this board made mention of a place in California that buys precious metals, I didn't catch the name. Aidens Grandpa

    that place is probably tulving

you might do just as well selling the graded stuff on the BST here. Although, since you don't do much posting and are relatively new to people here, you might get some dealers wanting you to send the coins first, before they send you the money.

  • Ms. Morrisine, that is the place that I was thinking of. Someone on the board suggested that I go there to sell my ASEs as they were paying more than APMEX. I thought about doing that but after Googling them I think I will stay away from them either buying or selling. There are some stories on Google that make me think that the place is not a good place to do business. Have you ever done business with them?

Since your in NYC, I suggest come out to Long Island LINK; either get a table or sell to the dealers.

If it were me, I would try my local craigslist.com to sell them. Make sure you mention clearly CASH ONLY, NO SHIPPING, NO DEALING WITH ANYONE UNDER 18, WILL MEET IN A PUBLIC PLACE.

I sell all of my 1 oz. silver bullions on craig's.

No way I'd give anyone on craigslist anything other than a cell # and a public place to meet.
