I should add - the article seems to do what the author wants. It's easy to read and somewhat "gossipy" which matches current style. It’s just not the kind of material I find especially useful.
Yet the sources, especially John Albanese, who arguably is the foremost authority on rare coins, certainly have their finger on the pulse of what is selling, why its selling or not and how much of it is around.....
I was disheartened to read JA gives the current coin market a 4 on a 1 to 10 scale.....oh well I will remain a groundhog and not sell, not sell, not sell.
I manage money. I earn money. I save money . I give away money. I collect money. I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
Rich Ulrich states in the article that the only Washington other than the 32-D and 32-S worth a premium over melt is a really nice AU58 36-D. That's a bit difficult to believe.
O’Higgins contends that “Capped Bust Quarters are extremely underpriced; they are more than twenty times rarer than Capped Bust Halves, but the prices are not much different.”
This is why I love capped bust quarters. I hope it stays this way while I am a buyer. They are one of the best kept secrects of coin collecting. There are so few of them that if demand really heated up, it would be nearly impossible trying to find really nice coins at a decent price. I hope Rich Uhrich is correct.
On the flip side, I do believe some price guides are way off when it comes to capped bust coins and that keeps some buyers out of the market. If the price guides are way lower than reality, collectors look at the price tags on the coins and it scares them away. They feel like they are getting ripped off. Once the price guides get closer to reality, I think this will help demand. JMHO
Liberty Nickels as a series, in MS 66, took a huge drop in price about 2 years ago and have as a series, been steady since then.
Re CAC coins, I think it depends on the series. Someone here mentioned that John A is a gold guy, and said poster respects the sticker on gold coins. I don't collect gold, so I can't comment personally on this. I respect the sticker on coin series on which I rarely see said sticker. A good example would be Bust $s.
