LSRC SACRAMENTO SHOW REPORT...WOW !!

PQpeacePQpeace Posts: 4,799 ✭✭✭
I decided to drive up a day early to see my daughter and girlfriend who both live in San Jose.
That way it would only be a 2 hour drive to Sacramento for setup day.
I was the first one to arrive at the convention center docks to try and unload first.
None of the guards or dock workers had a clue of where to park,or what I should do.
Usually there is a line,or some order to unload.
Finally someone told us what to do,and how to line up.
Once the door opened,I setup as fast as I could.
I had predicted to all who would listen that this show would be a very good show.

As soon as my coins were unloaded,I started showing boxes to other dealers.
I was busy on setup day every second until we were asked to leave.
Most of my coins are in the $200-$2000 range, but some are up to 5k,and a few special ones up to 20k
I sold so many Peace Dollars in the 1st hour. 3 different dealers must have spent 40k on peace dollars alone, with just one coin being $4500. Most were $600 -$2500.
Nice peace dollars are hard to find, but were in high demand. They sell above sheet for white or CAC coins, but nobody had any problems with my prices..They all said..Find me more !

Thursday morning started out busy again. There were times that I had 4 people waiting at my table to look.
I sold more Peace dollars, lots of Walkers, and Morgans.Proof type was also in demand,as they are so under valued at this time.
In between buyers, sellers came to my table showing me coins. I was only looking to buy nice coins,or want list coins, unless I thought I could flip the deal to another dealer quick.
I bought 12k of Morgans from one dealer..about 25 ms65 morgans. All but one were below my standards,so I walked it over to a major wholesaler and flipped it for a quick profit.
Recently,I have had many customers ask me for Franklins.....yes I said Franklin halves. I havent sold one in years, but because of the recent demand,I purchased 19 BU rolls of many different dates.I dropped them off at PCGS to be bulk graded..so in a few weeks I will put them in my Ebay store. These are great coins to get new customers from Ebay.
After I came back,I sold a few proof Indians to another major dealer, who wanted more than I had.
The whole day was just as busy.I kept being asked to see my newps even before I got them logged in.Every dealer who looked at them bought at least one,and sometimes up to 5.
This creates more paperwork when I get home, but that is what I do.

Most of the boxes I looked through at my table were just product, and not up to my standards..so I passed on 99% of what I was shown. Some dealers know what I am looking for,so they just brought me the good stuff.
This makes it faster than looking over the same coins show after show.
Once thursday was over,I was exhausted...this is a good thing,as I was busy.
Time for a beer for sure !

Friday started out busy again..
I sold 5 toned morgans to one customer, and 5 to another...Color is still a good thing image
One dealer came by and looked at my newps, and I played name your price with him.
He bought 15k worth of coins, and his offers were just fine. No Peace dollars for him..He bought a nice 83 proof trade dollar, and 2 DMPLs..the rest were Morgans.
A retail guy came up next and teased me with 19 original rolls of Morgan and Peace dollars that he has had for many years.
He had 3 rolls with him as the teaser, and the others were at home. I looked them over, and no sliders..that was a good thing.I tried very hard to get him to sell me the 3,and the others when he came back..but no dice.
I guess he wanted to shop them some more before making his decision. He left, and said he would be back at 11am on Saturday.I figured I would never see him again.

After he left,Todd came by to pick up newps to photo for me.I must have given him 100 coins total, maybe 30 newps, and the rest that I just never had time to do.
The rest of Friday was just as busy...I never had a moment without something going on.I bought,I sold,I flipped..it was like years ago for me.It was fun.I even bought 90% silver.
Again..Friday night came,and I was tired.

Saturday started out with a customer looking for ms68 coins. I sold him two 80s morgans...he was happy !
I then went to Heritage to pick up my only Peace dollar auction win...I only liked 1 coin...and paid up for it.
Back to the table for more fun times. My customer with the BU dollar rolls called me,and said he would be late..but that was a good sign !
Again I was busy all day.
I had want lists to fill including many generic dollars in ms64 and 65.These were hard to find except for ugly ones,as most dealers have the same coins on their lists..Lots of demand, and the bid prices keep going up as silver goes up.
It is now 3pm on Saturday, and my BU dollar guy finally shows with all his coins.
I asked him why he chose me to sell them to,and he said he did so because I handed a customer a twenty dollar bill that when I counted his money,he gave me one too many.
I took a quick look through all the rolls to make sure all the coins were new...They were all BU except for a roll of 23s Peace dollars that were sliders.I showed him,and he agreed,so I paid him less for those.
He says he has hundreds of graded dollars to sell me next..I can't wait !
After He left,I hit the wall..I was beat. I had to write checks, and collect checks, and hit the road.
I don't know if it was just me,and I was lucky..but I had a fantastic show.
I sold alot of coins.I hit 6 figures after Friday..this is not alot for some dealers who sell mega coins, but when you sell coins in the everyman bracket, that is alot of coins.
Many of my newps are already sold, which makes my regular customers very happy.
Once I have the 19 rolls of dollars graded, they are probably already sold..I have alot of demand for common dates from ms61-66.
I will be listing newps starting later tonight.

Time to pack up and leave. My girlfriend was nice enough to take the train up from San Jose to drive home with me.
This also allows me to eat in the car,and not have to stop somewhere with coins in my car.

I stayed over in SJ Saturday night....went to church Sunday morning, and then hit the road.
It is about a 5.5 hour drive to my home with normal weather conditions..but this Sunday was different.
It rained for the first 3.5 hours, and then it started snowing very hard in Lebec..about 4000 feet. It was 31 degrees outside.
It was a good thing that I went to church,as they closed the freeway just after I passed through.
I am pretty sure many people had to sleep in their cars....
I unloaded my car,and hit the sack.
Again a great show for me,and it was good to meet some of my regular internet customers for the first time.

I have a busy day ahead of me today....banks,shipping,phone calls..
I love it !!

Back to work,
Larry

Larry glad to hear you made it home safely, and that you had such a good show. You have such great material, that I'm not surprised your customers clamor to see your material. And as always, it was great to see you! I came home on Saturday night and though it was raining pretty hard and quite windy, there were no issues on the Grapevine. I'm doing the same thing as you, bank, p.o., email, phone calls, etc. And I too love it!!

Oddly enough, even though I sell mostly commems, Larry's table was one of the first I went to on dealer setup day to buy some Peace dollar VAMs (Larry did anybody else want to buy Peace VAMs besides me?). When a commem guy seeks him out, the stars must have really aligned for Larry this show!

I made expenses and turned a small profit, but my total sales were only 60% of what I had hoped. I feel fortunate, though, as many dealers did not even cover their expenses at this show.

    Loved the report Larry, thanks!

Todd -- Why does that 1885 not look even 1% prooflike, let alone be holdered as a DMPL? The surfaces look totally satiny.

Congratulations Larry on such a successful show.
Glad to see Peace dollars are in high demand because my set, which is the current # 2 finest on the Registry, will be auctioned at the end of April in Illinois by Heritage. 23 of the 24 coins are in old green holders, so keep an eye out for them.

Good report and good to know that more than a few dealers felt they had a successful show. Because of a few factors including location, weather and economic conditions, this show had its haters and naysayers before it even started. It's a great thing when we prove them wrong.

Personally I had a good show. The sentiment was a mixed bag according to the dealers I spoke to. Some reported almost nothing going on for them while others like Larry and Charmy reported having an excellent show.

What were your observations regarding public attendance levels? To me attendance on Thursday was about normal, Friday seemed very weak and Saturday was pretty good with a lot of families and youngsters.

Also on two separate occasions I spoke to the ANA's top management regarding the future ANA spring and fall convention locations. Because they were largely satisfied with this show they stated they were committed to bringing another ANA convention to Northern California again in the near future. That is great news for many of us.

The weather in Northern California was a challenge for this Spring show. They either need to have these spring shows in warmer areas, or move them later. Next year Denver's Spring ANA is moved to May, which should be good. Denver is also a direct flight for many airports, which should also be good. The Bay Area might be an excellent location for a future April/May show, as there's an excellent customer base in Northern CA.

That Friday Saturday storm was an abnormality for Northern California. It is not uncommon for wet weather in March or April but rarely are storms in March or spring as powerful as that one. The fall season would be the ideal time for a Northern California show.

I'm also glad to see you got home in one piece. I did the same drive on Saturday and knew if I had waited much longer there was going to be a problem with the snow....
