An 1918-D Buffalo nickel

No obvious wear, but he seems to have travelled around a bit. What do you think--certifiable? And at what grade?

Looks OK to me and I would grade it MS63. But if you send it to pcgs and they think it is cleaned or what it will come back in their infamous genuine only holder. Then, if you want a grade, you would have to crack it out and send to ngc for their details grade holder. But as it stands it looks like a nice ms63 to me. buffnixx

I think it looks fine, all natural. I'd imagine a 63, outside shot at 64.

    Nice coin.

Am I the only one that looked at the date to see if a 7 was hiding under the 8?image

Nice coin that should slab at the MS63 grade.

Nope! You weren't the only one. That right to left / on the 8 looked mighty close to the 7 to me.

Likely 63... I would lean to 64, but just seems to lack 'crispness'.... nice Buff though.... Cheers, RickO

I am in the MS63 group because of the spots.

Solid 64 and very nice indeed! The 1918 Buffs are tough as the mint purchased the material for the planchets from outside vendors and were not very good, many planchet defects and lamination problems that lasted from 1916 through the early 20s or so....I'm looking for a nice 1918-D just like the one your showing....Very nice Buff....Joe

Big spread between just-makes-MS and ChBu. Looks MS63 to me. Nice coin as always.

My kneejerk reaction was AU58, because it does not look as crisp and flashy as those posted by crazyhound, among others. But
on closer study, I do not see any obvious wear on the key locations either, and I had to realize that the buffs usually posted are exceptional MS65 and up coins.
So MS63 may well be the right call here.

Assuming that is not wear on the buffalo's hip, I would agree with 63. Reverse strike is a bit mushy for it to make 64 and luster is a bit hard to tell from this image. Nice pick-up -- please let us know what it grades if you do send it in.image

Some of the coloring between the letters FIVE CENTS and around the edges of the devices makes me a little nervouse. Assuming the coin grades, I would bet AU58 even though I don't see any obvious wear. It's a very late die state which can sometimes sway a grader to be more conservative than usual.

Had 2 look twice after reading others grade it....
I would wager AU-55 - wear on hip/tail and buff head....sure all strikes are not equall...my call is wear.
Not sure if it would grade...reverse color (could be pics) looks a little dodgy.

I agree with AU wear but that doesn't seem to affect the plastic grade if it has the looks. On an 18-D nickel, the 8 is always the first place to look, not for wear.

I think some of you guys are seeing a weak strike and confusing it with wear. I see no wear and the OP says there is no obvious wear and I assume he saw it in hand. With better pics, I could change my opinion about the grade of this coin.
