Numismatics and Pizza

You can go all the way back to Spanish dollars and see that they were cut up into pizza-like slices as the needs of commerce dictated.
Along came the deep-dish pizza, which clearly was inspired by pieforts (very thick coins).
Endroll toning makes coins look like pizza cut in squares.
Then there was the very long thread about collecting Chuck-E-Cheese tokens.
And pretty soon the ANA will have to start gushing about pizza, because all the coin shows are in Chicago

Question: "What are Morgan dollars?"
<< <i>New York has the best pizza... Chicago makes a cheese and veggie pie... Real pizza comes from NY and true pizza lovers know this. Cheers, RickO >>
Actually real pizza comes from Italy.
The Chicago and New York incarnations, tasty as they are, are simply American bas*ardizations.
The recent "coal fire" or "brick oven" trend in the states, is, I believe, a bit closer to the Italian version. I really like Serafina in NYC, they are one of the ones doing this.

I totally agree , i looked forward to trying American pizza when i arrived from Europe , it's among the worst i've had and i've tried a few. The biggest offenders being pizza hut which i wouldnt feed a cat with and dominoes who know fine the food is garbage but like doing commercials reassuring the public it might not be this time. The smaller family run places are better but so far removed from what pizza is it seems criminal.

NY ? Best pizza? LOL. The absolute best pizza comes from New Jersey and the Tomato Pies from the trenton are off the charts. Ask Mr Broadstruck on the latter. If you like I'll post a pic
But some pizza in NY tries to be like Jersey pizza and therefore they come in 2nd place
Eat your heart out NY and when you're hungry for a great pizza, just drive over the bridge or under zee tunnel.

Ricko is correct. The best pizza in the world is in NYC. You can buy it at any just about any pizzeria and it's always great.
When I relocated to CA from NY in the early '80s pizza was one of the biggest disappointments in food, along with bagels, bakeries and delis.

If I'm going to go to a foreign country for pizza, I would choose Italy.
Connecticut has its fair share of outstanding pizza places. Longacre weeps for those who have not had pizza prepared in a coal-fired brick oven.

4th best was in a little place on the island of Koh Samui Thailand, don't remember the name but it's on ring road behind the golds gym just outside of Nathorn. Pizza was number 4 but the desserts were absolutely off the charts.
I almost forgot to mention Connecticut. Been there a couple times. It's............."ok". Worthy of an honorable mention

<< <i>The 3rd best pizza after New Jersey ( #1 ) and NY ( #2 ) was a place in Saigon called Mama's at the superbowl near the airport. Nunzio the owner is from Sicily and married to a Vietnamese. Great people who will go out of there way to make you whatever you want.

Well, no. Pizza originated in France, not Italy. The French decided that they would let Italy take over
for them, and move on to real food, not cheese and tomatoes on top of dough.
In any case, if you want "real" pizza, best make it yourself. Some of the take and bake pizzas that
they make at Whole Foods are not bad, especially when they use unusual cheeses (like gorgonzola).

Been to Korea and had fishsticks on a layover. Everyone at the table laughed when I said "welcome back to the west" ( the Korean didn't laugh lol ) and went to Costa Rica just for fun. No pizza

Not that one! It's a "tomato pie". Very little cheese and stewed tomatoes. Off the charts and not unhealthy.

Chambersburg ! I know a dealer from Philly who drives to Trenton to wait in line for an hour at DeLorenzo's.
The secret? Well, I don't know. But I like more tomato and less cheese.
NY pizza? Pity the fool.

don't handle your coins after eating pizza.
(FWIW, I think Philly and NYC both have great pizza. But numismatically, the best pizza in NYC has to be Angelo's on 57th Street -- how many deals, pre-auction planning sessions, and post-auction celebrations have been conducted over one of their beautiful thin crust pies?)

That would make sense. I know a caterer from LA who services movie companies. While bagels don't hold up to the rigors of FedEx packaging, 50 lb haunchs of steamed pastrami and corned beef are shipped because so many movie people spent enough time in NYC to know the difference As noted, it's H2O + secret ingredients even coin doctors are in awe of.
Per Pistareen's appraisal of Angelo's as a hotbed of numismatic pizza consumption: really good pie for NYC and location, location, location.
One of the policies Stacks-Bowers is expanding is the serving of Angelo's Margherita pie (topping upon request) at lot viewing. A shrewd move from Napolitano, considering he's a paisan from Minnesota.
Oh wait! Seems he's originally from NJ.
