EBAY to raise final value fees from $50 to $100 max

Starting later this year, July 6 i think, ebay has just announced that it will be raising its final value fees maximum from $50 to $100 for non-store owners. I guess they are not making enough money (sarcastic)!

<< <i>The last time they went up, sometime last year around this time, was the end of ebay for me. I think i've posted 2-3 things since. Paying 15-18 percent when you include shipping and paypal was just not worth it. I wonder what this go around will do to those that didn't leave like I did last year? hmmm.... I think they should go to the 15% buyers fee like just about every other auction does, that doesn't prevent buyers from buying and it helps the sellers, who if Ebay didn't have, they wouldn't be ebay. Just my thoughts....Jake >>
Not sure where you got your fees schedule from, but as a "store owner" my fees, which btw include a 20% discount on the FVF, is less that 10%
8.75%.........up to $25
3.50% ........$25.01-$1,000
1.50%.........$anything over 1,000.01
PayPal 2.9% or less.
You can continue to pay your 15% - 20% auction + buyers fees, I'll stick with ebay.

<< <i>I didn't have a store OPA and I realize that that is the way to go. Paying the monthly store fees plus all the other fees just wasn't worth it for me either >>
I agree with you 100%, that unless you sell at least $1300 a month...a store is not for you...Basic Store fee is around $15. a month.

Those are the old fees from before the last increase. It's currently:
8.75%.........up to $50
4.00% ........$50.01-$1,000
2.00%.........$anything over 1,000.01
New, upcoming fees drop the first $50 to 7.5%, and the rest stays the same. BUT, the new fees will be charged also on the shipping cost.

<< <i>As a store owner on Ebay are you given discounted fees for true auctions? Or are the fee's discounted only for the "buy it nows"? >>
A 20% discount of FVF of all auctions is credited to your monthly eBay invoice.

<< <i>A guy sold a silver dime for a dollar and charged $2.95 for shipping. After all fees, he was forced to recycle aluminum cans in order to afford a burger on the dollar menu at Burger King. This was a 90% silver dime, which could have gotten him two burgers if we had been on the gold standard and people understood the value of silver.

If he sold a dime for $1.00 & charged $2.95 in shipping fees, he still came out ahead, because it only cost him a max of $1.41 to mail it out. That amount even includes the Delivery Confirmation fee. On the other hand, he probably stuck it in a 1st class #6 envelope for $.44 in postage/ Either way, he sold it for over melt.
Like bankers, they've exploited the process - and their own rules - to find ever deeper access to the pockets of small business, and individuals. It will inevitably lead to a charge for accessing the site, inflation-based or automatic increases in fees and percentages.
It appears that small time sellers will have an 11% FVF + the 3% PP fee, and with the raise in the cap from $50 to $100, they clearly see larger ticket items being increasingly purchased on the web, in particular, their site.
If there ever develops a better way, people will flock to it like flies on a cow chip.
It's about greed. It's no longer about good business, unless you're speaking to your board of directors... at that point, it becomes an exercise in exploiting the system, bending the rules, and paying for that new summer home, and the company plane.

<< <i>I left eBay about a year ago (I have since sold my pucks and a few odds and ends) when they eliminated the $20 cap and I lost my power seller status when they changed it to items and dollars. I take my gold to my local B&M and do just as well there and don't have to worry about crooked buyers. When I do sell, since I won't get the FVF credit, I charge enough to cover shipping + the 3%. Now I will cover enough to cover shipping and the final value fee + the 3%. I believe this will be the death of bullion sales on eBay. If you want to get melt for a 1 ounce gold eagle ($1400) you will have to sell it for $1550 and charge for shipping. My local B&M is selling eagles for $1495 and will pay $1425. Definitely time to 'buy/sell local' >>
FYI.....2010 AGE .... APMEX Buy Price - $1,435.00 (based on $1397 spot) Sell price ( one coin) $1475...
For guns and shooting related items Gunbroker.com and Gunsamerica.com both do well.
A coin auction site might do OK but it would require a significant investment and support.
Would likely require a joint effort of PCGS-NGC and possibly a publication like coin world to have a chance to make it.
Would require deep pockets as first several years would be a loss.
That 20% is only if you meet the requirements as a "Top-rated" seller. There used to be several levels of discount on final value fees depending on your performance, 5%, 15% and 20%. Now there is only is only the 20% possible.

But I'm not going to help her.
"How is it not 100% hypocritical for Ebay to be trying to make a profit on shipping costs when they repeatedly insult and chastise sellers who do so?"
Breaking it down.
At 9% fee, $550 sales = $50 fee
At 9% fee, $1100 sale = $100 fee
A $16 monthly fee for a store = $160 a year, if you sell three items for $1100 a year, the saving in FVF fees pays for your store and the rest is in your pocket.
Not to mention items sold between $550 and $1100.
So, for people who sold more than three Puck sets, it would be benifitial to have a store.
Right?
I don't know anything about the stores, is there anything hidden there??

You have to be a top-rated seller to get the FVF discound. I've sold over $20K in pucks in the past couple of months. However, because I don't sell 100 items/year I'm not a top rated seller. The hassle of just selling 100 low priced items is just not worth it.
Once the fees go up if a store is worth it I'll do it.

From ebay email March 14:
"Starting July 6 Final Value Fee rates for sellers with a Store subscription will be reduced for both Auction-style and Fixed price listings and applied to the total amount of the sale--including shipping."
"Starting April 19, for sellers without a Store subscription, the Standard Final Value fee rate for Auction-style listings will not change, but will be applied to the total amount of the sale, including shipping. The number of free Auction-style listings per month will be capped at 50, with maximum Final Value Fee of $100."
Lance.
I wish someone could knock them off their high horse and force them to at least pretend to face competitive pricing pressures, but as I said, this sort of business forms a natural monopoly.

And some people stop buying and selling coins altogether. No more flipping for me. Time spent on eBay down 95% over the past couple years. I'm strictly buy and hold now.

That can't be right ? They made me a top rated seller and said it's based on my feedback.I think there might be some confusion with powerseller in that post? I'm a powerseller as well and that was based on sales.
Now an increase.
Just won`t do it anymore.
