Stacks wants me to pay how much for their auction catalogs?

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,893 ✭✭✭✭✭
I got a letter in yesterday's mail. Asking me to submit payment of $99 to receive a year's worth of auction catalogs.

Say what? Did I read this right? I threw it away before reading more thoroughly. Surely I missed something. I don't recall Heritage sending me an invoice for their hefty catalogs.

Have i just not spent enough with B&M and Stacks?

They most likely will credit you $99 towards an auction invoice image

Can't answer for sure as I have a huge box full of their catalogs that just arrived sitting on the floor next to me and I didn't get a letter.

If a letter came in the box, I didn't notice it... I hope they don't bill me $99! image

i was burned pretty bad with one of thier blind lots a few years ago, soon afterward i received an email for whatever reason from one of the girls there, i explained the situation (with pics of the coin received and the grade that was on the lot) never heard back, and i havent bought a thing from them since.

When I blow large amounts of money on their auctions, I rather feel like that was a swift kick in the bum. I will kick them to the curb. My "invoice" went down the shredder.

IIRC Heritage started charging for them awhile back, but crediting the charge to your purchases.

I sold a significant collection through Stacks a couple of years ago and they don't even have me on the list any more!!!!

  • I have asked them in person TO NOT send me any catalogs...

I have checked off the box that says "DO NOT SEND ME CATALOGS" on the two occasions I did place bids with them...

...and yet, I continue to receive catalogs... I glance thru them and then I toss them... they are of little to no use to me...

Should I receive a bill from them for these unwelcomed catalogs... they just might get an unwelcomed phone call from me... image

They have always given the opportunity to pay for catalogs, even ANR, B&M, B&R, etc. did, however they always waived it for active bidders, I think even if you never won anything.

Most active bidders receive complimentary auction catalogs. However, sometimes, it would appear, folks may get placed on the wrong list. If you are indeed active, a simple phone call will likely get you placed on the correct list.

A few years ago, I turned off the flow of auction catalogs and have not regretted it. Everything I need is available on line. No need to take up more space in the house for material that I rarely, if ever, use.

I agree with this answer, but note that a rant in this space would have been waaaaay more entertaining.

I'm trying to get auction houses to quit sending me their catalogs. I can view lots online a lot easier. Of course there is an occasional catalog that is a keeper.

I've changed my mind about people having what I consider minor technical problems with Stack-Bowers. You are truly wise to not wish to do business with them. I applaud your decision.

A few more of you not bidding will just give me more opportunities to buy coins for less.

    Really, stay away.

    Please.

At $99, if they are anything like the Heritage auction catalogs, Stacks-B&M is losing money on them.

Glossy printed catalogs are really expensive these days, and the postage rates are only getting worse. I can’t blame the auction house for wanting that kind of money for inactive accounts. Heck, I visited a Cadillac dealer the other day, and he didn’t have any brochures about his $60,000 + cars image. He had to print stats off the Internet.

In another hobby I have to pay $40 for three issues of political button auction, and those catalogs are nowhere near as large or detailed as a numismatic catalog.

Yea, the price is high, but it's high for a defendable reason.
