Gold Scam ALERT!!

I received this from Bill Brewer:

GOLD SCAM

It has been reported that a deaf telephone call service was being used to scam gold coins out of a dealer from South Carolina.

The call comes in and they order a couple of gold coins and are charged on a credit card. The card accepts the purchase and a request is made to ship coins to a place in NC. If this is done then another call comes in and wants to know how much gold could be bought. The scammer requested that the coins be charged on 2 separate cards and needs to be shipped to an address in California, it did not matter what the shipping charges were. These cards check out but he shortly was contacted and told it was a fraudulent purchase. The Dealer contacted the Post Office in order to stop the coins from being picked up at the other end, which they were caught in time. The Post Master General is now involved and they recognize the ship to address and found that this wasn’t the first time.

Be careful in telephone orders.

Normally, merchants have a policy that expensive items are only sent to the CC billing address.

If they want to use a credit card, I have them do it through paypal and split the paypal fee. Theft insurance courtesy of paypal.

The dealer-to-dealer network has been reporting that scam for the past month. They must have a deal directory because dealers all over the country are getting the call.

By the way, it is not a real deaf relay operator. The person claiming to be the relay operator is the thief.

They tried that with me, but I told them that I only deal with new clients in person.

We have gotten these calls a few times. There are a lot of problems with attempted fraud on bullion right now.

In actually, a matching billing and shipping address isn't even 100% safe right now. Some scammers are using matching and billing addresses, then requesting you to overnight FedEx the bullion. They then call the FedEx office claiming that they will not be home to receive the package and go to the office to pick it up in person, thus intercepting the package. Obviously, there are safeguards against this, but some have fallen for this.

The same scam I believe is happening via email inquiry. So beware.

Scams are legion and new ones are being pushed every day. Strangely, people still fall for the old 'pigeon drop' scam...which has been detailed in print and television over and over again. Cheers, RickO

Be aware. This scam is still trying to be pulled and a Coin Shop in NC received the call yesterday.

Odd that this is hitting the coin dealers. This has been a bar/restaraunt scam for a long time, although with the charge extra and get cash back twist.

  • Now I realize that this scam must have been tried this on me. A few weeks ago, I got an odd call... the person said they were a deaf relay call service located in Florida and had a call for me ... and that they would relay the message from the other end... ???? I know of no person who is deaf, on any basis, that they would be calling me from Florida...

...anyway, I asked this person on the line "who is the person placing the call?"... they responded that they were not authorized to give me that information... image ... so I responded with "then I am not authorized to accept this call" image ... then I hung up and did not give it another thought until I just now read this thread...

such a world we live in... oy vey

Dozens of Dealers across the country have
received these calls, including myself about
    three weeks ago.

They seem to be working of a master list of
some type - maybe a listing of the Teletype
dealers, or something similar - yes, lots of
local coin shops around the country too.

In the last few weeks, many dealers ran
messages describing just such a phone
    call.....

If I get a call I think my reply is going to be, "I can't hear you, I'm deaf!"
    When in doubt, don't.
