We loose more potential error collectors as they start their journey like this...

I think it wound up in a vise with a nickel in Harrys Momas garage.

The seller is right in that the cent was "whacked" by a nickel die. In this case a nickel itself was the die and the hammer did the whacking. image

Can I bid on the hammer separately?

This makes me very angry; some complete jerk taking advantage
of an inexperienced collector. Broadstruck is right, we'll loose a potential
    error collector because of this.

I hope the buyer returns the coin - and I hope eBay blocks the seller
from ever listing anything in the future. Did anyone try and notify eBay
that this was a bogus error coin ?

Wow.. someone paid $280 for that fake coin.... incredible. And when someone tells them the truth, they will be furious... with the one that tells them. Cheers, RickO

I wonder if I could get a list of the bidders. I have a bridge in Arizona....
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Not as Described, Listed as an error which it is not. Should be able to get a refund, but I think the bider need a refund from the one handing out brains, or perhaps he missed that day.
