Who thinks the Shield design will endure for 50 years, as did the previous two?

Better question, will the cent endure another 50 years?

  • I doubt it , perhaps ending it on a high note in 09 would have been best.
  • It's the herald of its demise.

The US Mint, or congress rather since they control what coins the mint is authorized to make, should relegate the cent to collector only issues like they have done for the Kennedy half dollar. That way we don't get stuck with the bill for making billions of cents at a loss that nobody wants, and they could turn a losing proposition into a profit.

Maybe the mint is fulfilling a contract with Dansco and will make the final year 2016, just like the last holes on my Lincoln pageimage

My understanding is that the Mint has consulted with the ancient Mayan calendar which prophesizes the "end of time" as coming soon, and plans on curtailing circulating production at that time.image

All I can say is I sure hope somebody comes to their senses in Washington a long time before fifty years of making something at a loss occurs.

Hard to imagine the current pace of overspending won't lead to a seriously inflationary cycle. Maybe we'll still have pennies, they'll keep all the old ones and then by edict make them pass at 10c instead of 1c.

The cent is on life support due to the high cost of producing them.

  • The cent is still around only because of the complete lack of common "sense" that permeates the decision making process in Washington DC. Waste, waste waste, a perfect token for everything that goes on in Washington. The penny has truly become a symbol for America.
  • At some point soon, retailers may decide pennies aren't worth dealing with. How much staff time goes into dealing with pennies every day? Some businesses will start rounding. This could catch on, causing the penny to fade out.

I'm curious to see what the Canadians do with their penny.

  • Because on inflation, in 1972 a penny was worth what a nickel is worth today. Yet in 1972, our economy worked just fine without having a coin worth 1/5 of a penny. Most US military bases overseas don't use pennies because of the costs associated with transporting them. The opportunity costs of having to deal with pennies is also a burden for businesses.

Better question, will the fiat dollar endure another 50 years?

Cent, not a circulating 1c. Fiat dollar, definitely.
  • I certainly hope so. That would mean this country would still exist in 50 years which I highly doubt.

No. I think the days of the cent and possibly the nickel are drawing to an end, and sooner than we think.
I'm curious to see what that Ron Paul guy does?

As for the design? I like the Shield design, it has been used on a lot of our coinage over the years.

I like the design, however, I cannot see the cent lasting many more years as circulating coinage. It will be difficult to phase out, but necessary. There is also something to be said for the demise of the dollar. Something will need to change soon or we will experience far worse than a depression. Cheers, RickO

By any rational measure, the cent coins should have been discontinued by now.
