Need a list for a new collection I am thinking about.

GaCoinGuyGaCoinGuy Posts: 2,770 ✭✭✭✭
I've got an idea in my head for a new collection.

I want to do a commemorative set themed around the US Military. Just not sure what coins to add to it.

Here's the ones I know of....can anyone gimme some more ideas of what to add to it?

WW2
Korean War
Vietnam
POW

I also want to add the individual branch commems if they are made.

Maybe the Medal of Honor

Any others?

When you say commemorative... do you mean Commemorative coins?

THere was a coin for the Marine Corps from a couple of years ago, wasn't there? Shouldn't be too hard to locate one.

I gathered over 900 different challenge coins during 11 months in Afghanistan. There are probably over 100,000 different challenge coins... I'd stay away from these unless you have a very specialized collection.

Thanks! I think I am going to stick with the more contemporary commems for now. What exactly are "challenge" coins?

I like the idea of putting the Patriot half in there.

Challenge coins are a military tradition is some circles. A group of guys goes to a bar and pull out their challenge coins and whoever doesn't have one, Pays.
Many are given as awards by base or group commanders.

You'd almost have to narrow it to a favorite group or base or some other variable.
  • Dang Larry! I got about 400 challenge coins from the 6 tours I did and thought that was a lot! Good lordie jordie !
  • A good many presidents served, so medals, currency, depicting them in uniform might be a sideline, starting with George Washington.

I'd consider some of the older commems too:
    Grant commem
    Antietam
    Stone Mountain
    Gettysburg
    Lexington
    Lafayette

If just the men that served and not generals, Lexington (Minutemen) and Antietam (Civil War's bloodiest battle) might be representative.

The 1990 Eisenhower Dollar would be a nice addition.

Interesting reading about the challenge coins. I was in the Air Force and served during the 1st Gulf War and have never heard of them. Guess I wasn't in the right circle image

Wow... you guys have made my collection look positively anorexic.... incredible. Of course, not being active duty hurts. Guess I will have to get more focused on this. I bet Drunner has a bunch as well. Cheers, RickO

There was an article recently about the fact that EVERYONE has jumped on the challenge coin bandwagon - defense corporations, senators, politicians. It's becoming a mammoth frenzy and I dont think it'd be possible to do these unless you have a very focused collection - like units that served in Afghanistan, etc.
