I've gone to a few. This spring I plan on taking some stuff for consignment, in addition to a lawn tractor and maybe a '91 RX7 Convertible. At this point, it's all junk anyway.

While this stuff happens a lot (usually not AS crazy as you stated), there are deals to be had. I have pretty much stopped attending auctions because I can't buy anything there.
I know someone who cherried at the time the finest known 1937 DDO 25c at a small PA auction. PCGS 65 which sold for like $14k So you never know and still worth looking through everything.
Went to a rural estate auction with a few coins, mainly Morgans and some GSA Morgans. The auction permitted you to request lots you liked out of sequence so you did not have to sit through the whole auction. We asked the GSA's be taken out of sequence and these very average GSA's broke $500, with some near $800 for 1882-CC's in roughly 63. We did not win anything.
