"non-official" ana holder

Just ran across this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/1926-MS66-ULTRA-FLAWLESS-GEM-TRENDS-900-/330532268453?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4cf54229a5

Anyone see these before? At first I thought it was a old generation anacs holder. These could be very deceptive.

    Link

That's impressive for a fake holder. That said, you can report the item for putting a value in the title image

Thanks for adding the link image.

The guy appears to have several of these for sale. Are the labels self made? Or are they an ANA product? It seems too that the photos are intentionally deceptive, as they do not show the edges of the holders well.

True, but what makes it a fake slab.... that it says non-official?

  • The seller says in the text "non official." Anyone who spends one minute reading the listing should know to take the MS66 rating with a grain of salt. Ignore the holder, look at the coin.

It's a copy of the ANACS slabs before the sale to Coin World about 1990. The font is correct, but the background on
the label is a repeating pattern of NON OFFICIAL ANA GRADE instead of OFFICIAL ANA GRADE. And the seller ID is HEART4JESUS.

Reported - these are obviously designed to defraud, including the seller's weasel words.

Here are the item numbers, for anyone else who would like to report them and not have to look them up, one by one:

  • I have seen these before.

If you look at the label very closely, in the green font it states "Official ANA grade NCN"

NCN is a basement grader. Last summer they flooded my local craigslist with some key date Morgans and Peace dollars, graded 66+ but their asking price was in the lower MS price range.

Seems to me, if they were credible like NGC or PCGS, the grade they gave those coins would be as accurate as a subjective grade can be, and they would be asking going retail for them as well.

Your analogy stinks. The Ebay seller being discussed here, is in violation of Ebay listing policies, and is being reported to Ebay. The poster to whom you replied is not violating any policies. Curiously, since your advice to him was "don't like the coin....move along.", why didn't you do the same, with respect to the post you replied to?

the same reason you replied.......nothing better to do.

are we buying coins or plastic ? as been said in the past by many ( even here) ...buy the coin...not the plastic.

Where is he in violation of Ebay listing policies? He doen't claim that it is certified by one of the allowable TPGs. He specifically says that it ISN"T in an official ANA holder.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

It is a violation of Ebay listing policies to include a grade in the title, except in the case of approved grading companies.

And he doesn't. He calls it a "flawless gem."

Sorry, I was speaking about a number of listings which I included in a previous post and which included grades in the titles It appears that he ended at least some of them after I contacted him.

The listing which started off as the subject of this thread was also revised this morning - I don't recall if it originally had a grade included in the title or not.

The title initially said MS66 and said the coin was valued at $900.

Sure you can 'move along' but also a lot of us care about the effects rip off artists like this have on the hobby. Sellers like this are clearly attempting to deceive people who might not have as deep a knowledge of slabs, slabbing history etc. as most of us here on the boards. When someone buys one of these as part of a collection etc. only to find out later that they paid way too much for something that was presented in a manner to confuse a customer (and an attempt to make it look like an old ANA slab without being clear either in the photos or in the description is IMO clearly an attempt to do so) it reflects badly on the hobby as a whole and since heck, we might as well face it, coin collectors are leaving the hobby faster than they are joining, ever collector is important.

Just my thoughts on a Friday....

I can't tell if the label says NCN or NON but in either case, I would expect that just saying "OFFICIAL ANA" would be a violation of the ANA trademark.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Methinks the "OFFICIAL ANA GRADE" part of the label refers to the ANA grading standards. I may be wrong.
It is certainly deceptive in that it implies that the coin was graded by the ANA.
