But, but, but...it's a roll from the San Francisco Fed, and it's never been searched, so they must all be S VDBs!!! It's a steal!!!

    NOT!!!

Even if the entire roll were 1909 VDB's with no 'S' wouldn't $300 be a good buy?

Who knows what else is in that roll? Look at how shiny the alleged "end coins" are. Those have not been exposed to the atmosphere for 101+ years. It is obviously a put-together roll.

If a roll of uncirculated cents sat for 102 years, the END coins cirtainly wouldn't be bright RED. Come on...
The ones toward the center, possibly. The end coins, no way.

I am sure its a great deal. The 4 neutral and 3 negs the sellers has received alone from the same scam make me positive that this roll is a great deal. image
  • taxmadtaxmad Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭✭
Might be a stupid question (to go along with my earlier one) but can these types of rolls (shotgun ends) still be produced?

An excellent example of the reality that buyers pay very little attention to feedback. So, sellers, the next time you get a neg or neutral don't go off the deep end worrying about it.

I don't generally play "eBay cop", but isn't it against the rules to suggest that you "might" find an '09-S VDB in here?
  • vibr0nicvibr0nic Posts: 614 ✭✭✭
    Everyone involved sucks here.

The seller for the cleverly written, misleading listing.

The buyer for not taking 2 minutes to check a little feedback.
I like large size currency and silver dollars.
  • It IS interesting that the fools who bid on these do not take the time to see other OBW rolls with 09VDB's on either end having been sold by the seller already! BTW the seller, noahdubois32 misplelled his name. I believe it is supposed to be no im dubious!
Lurker since '02. Got the seven year itch!

All the rolls like this on Ebay are searched and none live up to the buyer's expectations. It's a rip.

If the roll was really from 1909, the wrapper looks awfully fresh. The coin roll paper back then would not look that good today … if they were rolling cents back then. I also don’t think that they were using the machine rolled technology that you see here. The ends of the roll would be folded over, like you see for the wrappers the bank gives out to customers.

Here’s a chilling thought. Perhaps this is the reverse of a Chinese counterfeit. One of the scary things about the Chinese junk is that they are copying common coins along with the rarities. One of the great fears is that they will ruin the hobby from the bottom by distributing the common stuff that less sophisticated collectors buy.

Look at it this way. Would you sell a roll of BU 1909-VDB cents for a little over $6 a throw when MS-60 coins are on the Gray Sheet of $18.50?
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Looks like decent 64RD's on the ends. If were all '09 VDB's it's a steal (even if no DDO's) as there are sure to be at least some DDO's (probably Die 2) in there.

The last roll (of original '09 VDB's) went for near $11k a few years ago (idiot me passed at $5,500 BEFORE the seller realized how mony DDO'[s there were) & had about 15-20 DDO's.

Of course I have no way to know what's in HIS roll & I assume it's neither unsearched nor all '09-VDB's

And what are the chances of all the rolls that he sells that VDB is showing at both ends and nothing in the middleimage I'm sure that it's just random chance.

Take two $10 coins and put them on the ends and fill the rest of the roll with EF 40's and 50's Wheats, and sell if for $300 plus..................Genius.

    Still, he's scum.

The Federal Reserve system was not created until 1913. This type of machine wrapped roll was not used until the 1930s or 1940s. So, clearly the roll is "made up". The VDBs on the end combined with the San Francisco wrapper is intended to deceive.

I always wonder if these folks don't salt some rolls with cheap fakes. The buyers aren't likely to look their "gift horse" too closely before they give feedback.

It would be funny if a shill won it and said that he found three 1909-svdb's in the roll in his feedback.
