"Selling for a friend", and no other high priced coins currently for sale. Worth the risk?

It's guaranteed genuine, he's listing it for a friend and they're trusted sellers! How can it not be worth the risk? It's only an hour from me... maybe I should visit the coin? image

He's selling the collection for his friend... circulated Lincoln cents, common world coins and a 1796 Quarter; why the hesitation?

No returns accepted = no way on a coin of this value. I also wonder why the coin is raw?????

Definitely sketchy. I know almost nothing about this series but in comparing it to a few google image results, the date looks off, and the stars look like blobs compared to the real deal. I'd say fake all the way.

Looks like a good coin to me. The High 6 variety. A no return policy means nothing to PayPal if coin is not as described.

The uneven compression makes me think the photo is doctored.

It looks genuine to me. However, it's certainly not problem free as the fields look repaired and the coin itself possibly bent and maybe even cleaned? I wouldn't risk it though just because I know very little about these.

Another prime example of why a collector should only buy a slabbed coin of this significance.

  • Any number of possibilities, from this being a totally legit offer of a decent coin, to this being a stolen or doctored image (and everything in between).

Personally, I don't need to take the risk of trying to buy high-risk coins like this in order to stay in business. So I don't.

The image looks odd/doctored to me too, tough my guess is that the coin is genuine. Still, that kind of risk is not for me.

Looks real but damaged and will not slab. With no return why take a chance?

Looks real to me. It also looks like it was bent and flattened out at one time.

I still cant figure out why someone would sell such a pricey coin like this raw, when they know they can get more for it in a genuine slab.

I would not be surprised if bent, straightened, tooled and repaired are apt descriptors of this coin. She's got some meat but she's had a rough go.
  • jdillanejdillane Posts: 2,365 ✭✭✭
Seller assured me that the coin had no tooling or repairs and advised that I could return the coin if I was dissatisfied. Hammering out @ $6K, I wonder if she might have fetched more had seller given a bit more information and expressly offered returns....

That coin was banged up pretty well. I bet it was bent badly at one time, too. $6k might be close to the going rate for a badly damaged VG of this date, though. I do think it's real.

Something looks odd about Ms. Liberty's profile to me. Could be a banged up cast copy? I've seen a few really good cast copies of early U.S. coins.

Many years ago I say a 1798 dime that got past the Bowers and Merrena auction house, and well known New England dealer and me. The piece had Fine sharpness, and looked great on the surface. The old ANACS cought the problem. When I really looked at the fields they really just a little wavey. Incidently Bowers and Merrina made good on the problem. image They refunded the money after the auction had been over for a number of months.

Here's a genuine 1796 quarter you can use for reference.
