Snow shoveling newp - 1995 unc $5 Civil War commem

I've been saving up my money from shoveling nieghbor's driveways for the past couple of years and decided to to buy something. I thought about something gold and after thinking about it, looking around and my dad showing me this on ebay I bid on it and won it! Here's a link to the auction. 1995 unc $5 Civil War commemorative I got it for $420 and thought that was a pretty good deal. They usually sell in the $800 to $900 range. With this being the sesquincentennial of the Civil War this year I was happy to find it and get it. The only thing I'm a little disappointed about is that it came in a flip. I wish it had the original mint packaging, oh well, my dad and I are looking.

I like the design of both the obv and rev. Here's a couple of pictures I took this morning. Sorry for glare and distortions off the flip. The coin looks great in hand.

I like that design alot, and if I were going to buy a commem gold, it would either be this one or one of the 2011 Army commems that were just issued. With a mintage of 12,735 it is a definite KEEPER! Congrats!

Can't go wrong with low mintage commemorative gold. Are you going to have it certified?

The Civil War commemorative $5 gold is one of the good designs in the series. I just wish they didn't cost collectors so much. Years ago I paid $995 for the six piece set in the wooden box. I also have a three piece Proof set in the "Union" plastic box. I just couldn't let that go after I got the six piece set because I like the case so much. Now with the price gold, keeping it has been a good idea.

$420 is a really great price for the Unc. piece according to the Gray Sheet. The sheet says it's worth $800, but I imagine you would have a very hard time getting a dealer to really pay that. Still you can't got wrong at $420.

My brother still shovels snow in his neighborhood for cash, at 47 years old.

Wow! What are they paying nowadays for a driveway shoveling? I am not that old and used to get $2-$5 er driveways and if I was lucky a cup of hot chocolate!

This story reminded me of the first gold coin I bought. I saved some money from a paper route. My dad loaned me a bit and I paid him $5 or $10 bucks a week to pay it down. When I decided to buy a gold coin - I went to the US Mint web site to see what they had - and ended buying a Grant Wood one ounce gold medallion. I have no idea why I picked that - I don't think that they had much to choose from.

I get $10-$20 per driveway depending on the size of the driveway and how much snow. I also do the sidewalks and porches.
