I looked at a roll of Half Dollars today that almost made my knees buckle

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was appraising several hundred coins the past couple of days, most of it good stuff. But when I opened a nondescript roll of half dollars, my eyes widened and I let out a subdued "Whoa".

I was staring at what appeared to be an original roll of Stone Mountain Commemorative Half Dollars. The two end coins were toned, all the middle coins absolute blast white. What was really amazing, every one of them looked solid MS65 or better, some a LOT better.

When I go back next week to finish, I'll take some point & shoot pictures.

Bah. If it had been Hawaiians, then you'd have something. A roll of mere Stone Mountains? Eh, whatever.

Good thing you found those rather than the local B&M who would have offered silver melt for the roll.

Original rolls are still out there ... possibly many more than most think possible.

Don't forget there is a doubled die obverse and a doubled die reverse.
Neat roll - can you post a pic?

I don't think the OP "sucks" here -- it's just an appraisal, not the purchase of something for a small fraction of its market value. image

Now had the owners had the misfortune of sending it to a shady and unethical dealer who would lie about the value to get them cheap, then *that* dealer would suck, in more ways than one.

I was thinking of going with, "I really hate to tell you this, but see the date here? These are expired, so you can't even spend them. But because you're so nice I'll give you 50% of face".

Seriously... let's see some photo's when you can!
  • I'd like to see the old wrapper, too. I'm sure you didn't hurt it. If you could also photo it, that'd be great.
