Out of Control
Seems that of late we have an abundance of alts, trolls, and other formerly banned posters trying to sneak back in and disrupt these boards.
The way I see it, there are two ways we can deal with this. The moderators can either go completely overboard enforcing the rules which may result in some good guys getting the boot as well as the bad - which I have never wanted to do. Or, all of you can help us by immeidately identifying any suspicious accounts or improper posts. That way we can focus on getting the bad guys out of here.
It speaks volumes that some people are so desperate to get back on these boards that they will resort to almost anything. Why couldn't they behave themselves in the first place? I am not going to let them ruin this experience for everyone else.
So, please help us make these boards a better place. The boards exist for our mutual education, information and enjoyment. If we work together we can deal with those who wish to do nothing but disrupt.
thanks
Don

im pretty sure its not legal to collect credit card information for something like that.
New members need to get beaten to be accpeted and out-going members are pretty much beaten to death then banned from the neighborhood.
You have my full support and let's be civil and respectful in our posts as well.
This is a great place for sharing and learning so let's cooperate to keep it that way. This should never be a place for personal attacks or vendettas.
Thank you Don.

it's pretty obvious that as a whole group we need to be under control and discretion.

I don't know if it's legal or not. Seems to me PCGS could charge $.01 for a membership and require credit card payment. I'd be fine with it but I'm sure that it would be a pain in the rear for PCGS to administrate so I doubt that will happen.
How should we report such behavior? I was tempted to PM you (Don) this morning about the rampaging alt (coinking90). Maybe I should have.
thanks for providing these forums for us,
Jerry
<< <i>Some other boards have a report button that appears on every post. Anyone who believes the post to be out of line can click on it, which brings up a box for the reporter to state why he believes the post and/or the poster should be deleted. This helps the moderator because it gives him a direct link to the exact thread and post to review, saving the moderator a lot of time hunting for problems. The system seems to work pretty well. Not sure if it can be enabled here though. >>
Great Suggestion customroll! I am very active on another non-coin related board that uses such a feature and it has worked wonders. Usually it is three valid strikes and you are out.
Mr. Willis, thank you for letting small time collectors and us hobby types share in the wealth of information available on this forum and on PCGS.com in general. Although I may never own a coin worth more than a few hundred bucks, and don’t post very much, I devour the information and education that is made available to me through his forum. I would hate to see that change.

Like Kitco has. Probably not too involving. I could probably have my programmers do it for very little cost, just need access.
Then again I'm probably wrong

This forum software does not have that feature.

Like I said, maybe im misunderstanding something. For one, I would appreciate detailed guidelines on how this will be handled, not just leaving it up to any old board memebr to run rampant pointing fingers.
I'm sure i'll get blasted for speaking up, but it had to be said. We all once were new members here. It's not fair to legit new members as it's being propsed.

I like this idea. If it can be done is another thing. At least a link at the top of every thread that allows us to send a note to moderator would be easy to do as well.
Thanks for the forums.
It is amazing to me that some just cannot behave themselves.
Thanks PCGS for providing them to us.

It can't with the software the forum is using.

<< <i>Who decides if an alt is being used and how can that person tell? >>
Mods and admins have access to the IP addresses of users. Once an alt is reported, they can make comparisons. Besides, if it's an obvious troll it doesn't matter if it's an alt.
Russ, NCNE
<< <i>Is another software a possibility? >>
It is unlikely that the database from this forum could be ported over to modern forum software. Fusetalk is built on Cold Fusion and runs on a Windows platform. Most modern form software is MySQL and runs on a Unix platform.
Russ, NCNE
Also, I think mods here need to make the distinction between someone who is simply opinionated versus someone who shows up merely to flame or troll others. Further, I agree with the concern that this may discourage new members, as the way I interpret this, they could very easily be unfairly deemed to be alts.
Just my humble opinion, FWIW.

That really is the only way to be 100% sure, the IP address i mean.On some forums it clearly says IP addresses are noted, can it be mere coincidence the behaviour is impeccable on those boards?
It's not just trolls who have created problems lately as others have stated. The gang up on a poster mentality is known across the web and it's been rampant, i don't think for one minute all the alt's are people why have been banned either.

No, thank you.
Let's see if we can all pile on doing the right thing.

VERY well said...I completely agree.
<< <i>As previously mentioned, there must be some way for users to be blocked from accessing the forum via IP >>
Yes, the software does have the ability to block IP addresses, either individual or entire subnets. The problem is two-fold, though. Many ISP's use dynamic addresses so even if you block it, the next time it's released, the user can get back in. The other problem is that when the address is re-assigned, a legit user might be blocked.
Russ, NCNE
<< <i>Wondering if on this board you can block IP ranges - which stops "certain users" from registering new accounts to come back and alt/troll etc.? >>

<< <i>The more I think about this, the more concerns I have. The big problem with this "report the troublemakers" idea is that a small clique of regulars could end up abusing it and turning the board into a de facto private club where they control who joins. That's not what the boards are for imo but invariably it seems that is how many DBs end up. Hopefully this one won't go that route. >>
I'm not worried about this. If this were a very large board with a dozen moderators, it might be a concern. But being relatively small with only a couple people accessing the trigger, I don't see that becoming an issue.
Unlike the eBay powerseller board where the button pushers wear out the report link with great success.
Russ, NCNE
How true, and you can say the same of virtually every ebay DB.
