Grades and crack outs...I sent them all in raw

At the Santa Clara show.

- 1853 half cent graded ~XF40 by the seller and me (an excessively prominent forum member): came back AU55BN (win!)
- 1827 large cent graded VF20 by ANACS: came back PCGS VF20 (wash)
- 1857 FE bought raw on BST, prior owner saved PCGS VF25 cert from his crackout: came back VF30 (win)
- 1920-D WLH bought raw and guessed F12: graded VG10 (oh well)
- 1940-S WLH earlier downgraded from 65 NGC to 64 PCGS. Bummed. Cracked and sent in raw. Came back MS65. (win? maybe wash)

Hey, at least they didn't find any random scratches. image

    Got a pic of that Half Cent?? I love the look of Half Cents from that era. Nicely done on your submission!

    Sounds like fairly respectable results to me.

    Your 1820 large cent might have come back with the same grade, but it's in more popular plastic now. Whether the added premium for the brand is worth what you paid to submit it or not is the question. Maybe a "wash", but maybe not. Probably worth doing, now that it's in the "better" plastic.

    Your '20-D half that fell short of expectations was only two points off.

    Your 1940-S that came back 65 after earlier failing to do so must feel like a small vindication. Too bad it took two tries.

    Overall, not too bad, I'd say.

    Who sold you the half cent? Sounds like a conservative grader worth buyin' from.

    Nicely done! My best raw PCGS submission was a R6 1795 Flowing hair half dime that came back graded VG8. I purchased it raw as a VG8 from Dick Osburn.
    All coins kept in bank vaults.

    These exercises are always good for refining your grading skills which is priceless. However, I think PCGS was the immediate monetary winner.
