I think Fred's opinion is needed too.
rim - I believe it's a small sliver of copper
that either remained from the upsetting
process, (on the planchet) or a detached
sliver of copper that found its way into the
coining chamber.
It's not a die error of any type, imo -
I'm sure Mike D. can give a more nuanced
explaination.
