If I started a new collection, what would you all suggest.....
I do NOT have the kind of funds that I did when i collected Saints....but I have the eye, the passsion and the pursuit of excellence. I don't want a set with 300 coins nor do I want an unaesthetic series. Don't be offended if I don't like what you collect....we all have our preferences!
I'm not saying I'm starting and I'm not saying I'm not.....

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
And "choice colonial gold" is waaaaay out of my league.
Gold could be included to make it more challenging but would greatly increase the cost (obviously).

A fun set with a lot of challenging coins, but no absolute stoppers.

<< <i>I'll 2nd AnkurJ's recommendation. A complete set of Classic Head Half Eagles in the finest grades certified. The 1834 Crosslet 4, 1838-C and 1838-D would be the major obstacles toward completion of the 8 piece set, but with your resources, it might be acomplished. I double dare you. >>
I actually meant 1795 to 1807 half eagles

I think half dollars starting all the way back would be a great set to work on.
How about a gold type set?
(Edited to say "Nobody loves and respects Frankies more than MrEureka, but...") I think that's going to be a tough sell this time.

I think this is a good Idea and there are some near top pops at the current HA, only problem being how short it is. That being said I would expand it to include the transitional years too;
1834-1838 P,C,D + crosslet 3 & the 1839 P,C,D & the 1840 large Diameter and small + all the mintmarks
I personally think Trades are the bee's knees but I hear others disagree. The Indian 5$ is a set that is under rated in Choice to Gem
>Draped Bust Half Dollars with the Large Eagle in an unmolested AU58. Short sweet set that should present a challenge but not impossible. 14 coins total.
I would love to see such a set.
Work on a date and major variety set collection like this low grade one, but in uncleaned AU or higher, and you'll have quite a set.
AnkurJ's early half eagle idea would be stunning, too, and quite a bit tougher depending on how deep into varieties you got
I don't see you getting involved in small and sometimes ugly coins so the early half dimes would be out, as would trimes and gold dollars, and quarter eagles
no base metals for you, so that eliminates all the copper and nickel
seated silver? coronet liberty? anyting with presidents? naaaahhhh
early stuff, big stuff. go for old half dollars, dollars, half eagles, or eagles

why are you asking us? we don't (well I don't) know what you like
how much are you planning on spending and how quick do you want it completed?
or will it be a never-ending work in process?
(I don't need to know this, but it will help you decide for yourself what your new collection should be)
I would consider a complete US type set of business strikes - in strongest strike (irrespective of MS grade) available in PCGS
that would keep you busy and upgrading/comparing to present collection
maybe start first with the gold, or silver, or copper, or nickel, or clad

The coolest eye appealing finest known`s you can find...No particular series or denomination but the coolest ones within your budget...For me if i was to want to change from my current interests in collecting i believe that would just be a blast....

I'm looking for a new series, too. I'd like to do a circ-cam date set of Washies for grins, maybe, but I don't know.
I'm still plugging along on my gold type set, but I'd buy a Walker upgrade before I bought another piece for the gold set, it's at 12 pieces and counting. I've been adding some out-of-the-ordinary pieces to it though, panpac commems, specifically.
I still shop mercs and standing liberty quarters, but I doubt I'll go anywhere significant with them.
Heck, best of luck finding your next run of coins! I know you'll make it special.
P.S. couldn't you dig on "Civil War"-just about anything? That's another one of my almost secret sets.

Jay,
I know you love gold - why not try the Indian Head Half Eagles ?

Now...many of the stuff mentioned is simply too cash intensive. i LOVE $5 Indians but they are very expensive in good grades, they are notoriously tampered with ( and I have NO clue how to tell most of the time) and lastly, I must say that there's surprisingly low interest in these. thjat's is imporatnt when considerint liquidation at some time. I owned a few really beautiful ones and had a hell of a time selling them!
I would actually NOT rule out something like great toned Frankies. They are the only moderns I like...as I'm a big Ben Franklin fan(I'm Philly born). They aren't expensive but the pursuit of really nice ones would create a challenge. Andy...not syrup...a set. Differengt pproach this time because it CAN be done well with a lower priced set.
I'm not ready...but always thinking.
THANKS>!
As an alternative I've been looking for the following items.
- 1913 non gold Proof set with undipped, original silver coins.
- A Charlotte and Dahlonega denomination set, and yes, I know I’ll need an 1854-D $3 Gold which is a tough one.
- The 11 piece one and two and half dollar commemorative gold set. I recently finished this.
- An Oak Tree and Pine Massachusetts silver denomination set. I need the three and six pence coins.
- A gold dollar all mints set. I'm looking for an 1854-S gold dollar.
None of this stuff grows on trees, but at least the list is long enough to keep me looking when I can’t find the three early gold coins I need to finish out my type set.
This set is attainable for all dates, and the series, while not "hot", which at this point is the market is a good thing for such an effort, always seems to attract enough attention that liquidity should not pose a problem.
<< <i>Collecting a series is boring -- no variety, and variety is the spice of life.
How about a gold type set? >>
I agree about collecting a series, except for classic commems!! And there are variations of the full series.
OTOH... another approach that might actually be more challenging yet much less expensive... would be a choice "everyman" set of AU55-58... could be done with ALOT of patience for 5 figures...
With your eye and taste, I would expect such a set put together by you to be truly eye appealling and highly desireable... whether you went full gem or PQ AU...
