How's this for a "box of 20"?

I think it would be a great sight to fill this collection with the most beautiful example of your favorite design from each of these categories. It would fill a box of 20, and present a panorama of amazing American coin design in every circulating denomination!

Yep, I wanted to keep with circulating coins only though, so the $50 and $100 are out. I like your idea too though. A $500 coin can't be too far off now. By the time you acquire your first 19 there may be a 20th denomination to add to the box!

<< <i>It leaves out way too much; for example, which half dollar would be representative of all the different types? >>
I think you could begin to cover off on this issue by your choices for each denomination...
i.e., if you include an early type bust dime, a later type bust half dime, a seated type 20 cent piece, and a Barber Quarter, then your half could be a Walking Liberty...
Great idea... I think I will undertake this at some point!
>>>My Collection
To me it seems more like a selective accumulation than it does a collection.
Somehow I just can't get addicted to the number 20 because it happens to be the number of coins in a PCGS or NGC box. It isn't like it is some sort of universal standard of measure. There are typically 20 cigarettes in a pack. but 25 shotgun shells in a box.
It is very difficult to build a meaningful collection without a definition.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

It's not about representing all the different types. It's about having an example of your favorite design within that denomination. This is one way to define a type set...albeit an extreme way

This large cent has great sentimental value to me. It was last coin my father who died 13 years ago gave to me. He really loved Christmas and always tried to make special.
The common theme here.....all first year of issue An interesting way to do a type set.

Some collectors do that, but it can get very pricey. The 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter comes to mind. Some collectors got for the last year as well.

2011 might actually be a good year to officially start doing that.

with additional early (pre-1808) silver and gold types. No coin in my dream box of 20 US coins would be dated later than 1855

Can you qualify which design you'd choose for each above (where multiple designs exist)?

3. Small Cent - Flying eagle
4. Two-Cent
5. Nickel Three-Cent
6. Silver Three-Cent - 51 o

Here's a twenty for the box.
I would drop the small dollar and add a $4 Stella.
