How's this for a "box of 20"?

JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,912 ✭✭✭✭
I think it would be a great sight to fill this collection with the most beautiful example of your favorite design from each of these categories. It would fill a box of 20, and present a panorama of amazing American coin design in every circulating denomination!

1. Half Cent
2. Large Cent
3. Small Cent
4. Two-Cent
5. Nickel Three-Cent
6. Silver Three-Cent
7. Nickel Five-Cent
8. Half Dime
9. Dime
10. Twenty-Cent
11. Quarter
12. Half Dollar
13. Silver Dollar
14. Small Dollar
15. Gold Dollar
16. Quarter Eagle
17. Three-Dollar
18. Half Eagle
19. Eagle
20. Double Eagle

I like you idea... I noticed most of your coins were different denominations, with the exception of the 1C, 3C, 5C and $1. I thought I'd try to see if there were 20 different denominations; I could only come up with 19?

    1. 1/2 C
    2. 1C
    3. 2C
    4. 3C
    5. 5C
    6. 10C
    7. 20C
    8. 25C
    9. 50C
    10. $1
    11. $2 1/2
    12. $3
    13. $4
    14. $5
    15. $10
    16. $20
    17. $25
    18. $50
    19. $100

Yep, I wanted to keep with circulating coins only though, so the $50 and $100 are out. I like your idea too though. A $500 coin can't be too far off now. By the time you acquire your first 19 there may be a 20th denomination to add to the box!

It leaves out way too much; for example, which half dollar would be representative of all the different types?

I think you could begin to cover off on this issue by your choices for each denomination...

i.e., if you include an early type bust dime, a later type bust half dime, a seated type 20 cent piece, and a Barber Quarter, then your half could be a Walking Liberty...

Great idea... I think I will undertake this at some point!

To me it seems more like a selective accumulation than it does a collection.

Somehow I just can't get addicted to the number 20 because it happens to be the number of coins in a PCGS or NGC box. It isn't like it is some sort of universal standard of measure. There are typically 20 cigarettes in a pack. but 25 shotgun shells in a box.

Any collection with a definition is great.

It is very difficult to build a meaningful collection without a definition.

It might be fun to fill this box of 20 with the best coins we own for each slot. I open it up with the half cent. This 1794 is one of the better examples I've seen for date.

It's not about representing all the different types. It's about having an example of your favorite design within that denomination. This is one way to define a type set...albeit an extreme way image

Would anyone like to keep going with the pictures.

This large cent has great sentimental value to me. It was last coin my father who died 13 years ago gave to me. He really loved Christmas and always tried to make special.

Some collectors do that, but it can get very pricey. The 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter comes to mind. Some collectors got for the last year as well.

The math geek in me wants to do a box of twenty coins, one of each of the following dates:

    1783 1787 1789 1801 1811
    1823 1831 1847 1861 1867
    1871 1873 1877 1879 1889
    1901 1907 1913 1931 1933

2011 might actually be a good year to officially start doing that.

the OP list is very neat and complete, however, personally, I'd probably have to replace these:

    3. Small Cent
    4. Two-Cent
    5. Nickel Three-Cent
    6. Silver Three-Cent
    7. Nickel Five-Cent
    10. Twenty-Cent

with additional early (pre-1808) silver and gold types. No coin in my dream box of 20 US coins would be dated later than 1855

    17. $25
    18. $50
    19. $100

    12. Half Dollar - Dr bust small eagle

Meaning 1796 or 1797? This would prevent most from completing.

Here's a twenty for the box.

I would drop the small dollar and add a $4 Stella.
