Funny how people can get something for free out of a box of cereal and then still want too much for it.

My understanding is it's a rare error , the market sets the price.Ive seen these go for a lot more.

I used to roll search for one of those until the presidental dollars came onto the scene. I was convinced some kids would have found a few and spent them.

It's not an error. It's either a die variety or a pattern. Anyway, they used to bring more, and now they bring less. The last one I bought was a 67 for $3450 at a Heritage sale. I thought it was a good deal, but not a steal.

"I got this from the cereal box 10 years ago and never opened the package"

Then, how do you have 2 PCGS graded coins?? Did I miss something?

Happy i could help , i was sure i'd find one in the house myself cos all we eat is cherioos for cereal..well..mostly , and you know what , i found a cherioos cent still in the wrapper , punted that on the bay.It haunts me there might be the dollar in the house in some drawer.I think the dollar came with a cent which explains two slabs as well. They also gave just the cent.

Edited to add , i obviously dont read the cereal box at the table , i cant even spell cheerios : )

I think erwindoc hit it right on the napper , for sure the vast majority of these had to have been bust open and spend at the candy store the same day it fell out the box into the bowl.

Do the slabed coins bring similar money without the certificate

Could someone tell me why they fetch so much money? Are they very rare?

I so agree. Just imagine how many of these are still sitting boxes of kid's stuff left at thier parents house when they went off to school. Certainly the vast majority of those who got these had no idea what they had. Of course, most were likely spent on candy, baseball cards, etc.

I'd sure love to find one at a yard sale!! This is just the kind of numismatic find that could pop up..

What were these going for when they were first recognized as a unique die variety? I was not into numismatics then.

They are a rare die variety. There have been some excellent threads on this forum w/great pics. The difference is in the feathers. If you just google "Cheerios sac dollar" you'll likely find some detailed info w/pics.

    Edited...the discovery specimen brought $23K!!!

The text is a great read....

This link has great pics of the feather details...

WHY don't they put one of the 22k gold Sacs in the Smithsonian?? They're locked up at Ft. Knox.

And, lastly, all that you want to know and see about the Cheerios sacs...

I want one in the worst way but there's not a chance in the world I'd send 5K to someone with 5 feedbacks and rotten pictures. And if what another poster said about no activity since 2004 then that pretty much red flags the red flag.

I signed in to look this time , it is true about no activity since 04 and it's as a buyer.A tough one to call whether it's bogus or not , it's the only item for sale and it's an item that just about anybody could actually have.I don't know a lot about hijacked ebay accounts but i'd reckon there would be more listed if it were and shorter duration.

It looks like the previous transactions were not numismatic.

It is just stupid to say that they were never opened and there they are slabbed.

Of course, there is PP buyer protection.

If the price were right (and it's not) I would consider them. I want one bad.

They are 64s and, based on some quick internet research, on the lower end of quality for graded ones.

    John,
If you really want it pay with paypal and your risk is zero. Paypal will not release the money to a 5 feedback seller until you have the coin and leave positive feedback. --Jerry

When I find a Sac dollar metal detecting on playgrounds I always check to see if it's this one. Maybe these kids didn't eat enough Cherrios.

I wish I'd have taken advantage of the situation like MrEureka has through the slowdown in the economic cycle (kudos Andy, pedal on ).
How many are there ? My suspicion is that there are fewer than 500 and it seems nobody can prove otherwise. Otherwise ... there would surely be more discoveries.

The mother and child motif (a long overdue honor) is incredibly beautiful and the original reverse design should have been left alone. Who isn't glad someone at the mint decided to change the design ?

I remember getting one out of a Cheerios box...and then spending it! I hope to high heaven it wasn't the "Cheerios" dollar. I guess I will never know, but I would sure feel stupid.

As stated that price is about double what I feel it is worth in that grade.
But it will probably sell someone is going to spend their bonus on it as it a part of the Sacagawea major varieties circulation set.
At the present time there are 220 sets registered in the PCGS registry that need this coin.
Only about the top eight have it.
And it looks like most of us in the number eight to twenty-ninth positions need only it to go to 100%.
I don't think I will put that much in the pot to fill that hole yet.

Yes. CW and/or NN reported one such find.

BTW, many of the Cheerios dollars may have found their way to Ecuador, where Sacs circulate widely. If so, future generations may find an odd situation, where perhaps half of the existing Cheerios dollars are uncirculated and the other half are heavily worn. There could be nothing left in between.

I'd be quite interested in a VG-8 Cheerios Dollar. That would be damn cool.

A yard sale find would be pretty cool. My grandmother used to eat lots of cheerios. She got me a cent that I still have stashed away. Too bad they dont command the premium like the dollar does. I pretty much gave up the roll searching for one when the presidential dollars came out. There are simply too many of them floating around to hunt through, then again the golden dollars dont circulate very much. Many of the ones I went through were either very shiny or that dull brown color that they turn when they sit with other change.
