  You can make an offer for the entire collection.

  PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
  I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

  if you "need" it for your set and there's only one of them and someone else has it, then the coin must be a "rare1"
  
  you have 2 choices: Make the owner an offer that, by definition, "he can't refuse", (whether by high number, or convincing persuasion, or some combination of both begging and buying)
  
  or
  
  Do Without
  
  Since you must already know this obvious answer, maybe you want to discuss the coin in question with us? must be an interesting story

  No one needs a coin. You may want it, but you don't need it. Unless it is a pop one, just enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Congratulate the person for a great item in their set, and move on.
