Several of the matte proof prices went sky high the last few years. The VDB is for sure the tough one. The 1916 is next. (If we leave out the doz. or so 17s I have put away)
Back in 2002, mine sold at auction as a 63 R&B in an old ANACS holder for $1955. So it was possible then to get one under $4000. But Today, a low grade example - maybe $10,000 is more realistic. But of course, you have to find one first.

OP must do yoga or something. I just tried to stick my heel in my mouth and the MTHD (mouth to heel distance) was at least 8". Is this thread about coins?

Not really rare yet instead rather expensive. They are readily available (at a price).
Price doesn't always relate to rarity- just desirability.
Whatever became of the hoard of these coins?

well.....the OP from 18 years ago has not replied yet so perhaps he DID devour himself.
He does visit the forum. Last activity yesterday.
"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
Since the member does still visit here, it would be nice if he updates his search/acquisition regarding the OP. Hello @mdwoods ... Cheers, RickO
Hats off to you if you can reach your heels with your teeth. You must be limber.
Good luck with that🤪
