Yeah, I'm all out of whack, haven't slept well in years! image

There's another, not so favorable post towards this dealer in this thread, why hasn't anyone tried figuring that one out? I've read it 3x, it's like 2 people wrote it but no-one has followed it up?

I always enjoy looking at your set Rob allthough I rarely look at the names. And looking at the names it reminded me of a couple of guys that I have'nt seen in a long time; Lincolncentman and Jacktheknife. Wonder what ever happend to those two??

Andy and Alynne are very nice people. They are strong supporters of PCGS and handle very nice coins. They seem to be very fair in all their dealings.

Here are some coins I've bought from Andy. They're not all perfect (various grades) but they represent the kinds of coins he carries.

I enjoy talking with him and have never seen him be anything but cordial and accommodating to anyone dropping by his table.

And yes, I agree...his website is horrible and should be overhauled.

I have been going to major shows since 1993, and I can honestly state that Andy Skrabalak is the single nicest person I have met in the world of coin dealers. He is also honest to a fault and has a wonderful eye for quality. He will bend over backwards working with you to help you finance that coin or coins you want to buy. Anyone who can't get along with Andy should probably be in therapy somewhere.

  • << <i>Dealt with Angel Dee's on several occasions and have had 100% positive experiences with them and their coins. Of the coins in my collection, some of my very favorties were purchases from them.

Don't quote me, but I believe photos are not provided because they are unable to provide photos that accurately show what the coin will look at in hand... think about it... even when looking at Heritage photos the photos don't always show what the coin looks like in hand, especailly for copper. Photos are rarely able to show the accurate color, luster and surface detail all in one image. So instead of putting up an image for you to base your decision on which may not truly represent the coin, it probably is better to get a description from an expert dealer looking at the coin in hand and then for you to see it in person yourself before you finalize the deal.

I've found they are able to describe coins very accurately over email/phone and I've never had to return a coin sent to me yet and I usually get a coin that is better than I imagined from the email/phone description. Overall, as a coin collector, there is no way I'm going to let the lack of an online photo keep me from getting the coin I want/need!!! If they have something you're interested in, give them a shot. >>

Ah hogwash! No excuse for no photos.

sure there is - a bad photo or scan is worth less than nothing -

it is easy to expect good photos when you have not made them yourself

if you figure 20 minutes a coin - on a couple hundred coins, thats a few days/weeks
I am not sure on turnover time, but some coins are problably bought and sold within a couple days (or minutes at shows)

I am guessing they have no great interest to add another staff member just to take photos and update all the sites they have them listed at

I have seen their exhibit at a couple national shows in the last 5 years - and have bought zero coins for $0 from them

Andy is one of the few dealers with an extensive group of top nickels (including Jeffersons) in their case (besides their small copper)
and is very personable and willing to share his knowledge and experience with interested collectors

Most of their coins are very flashy, with beaming luster and outstanding eye appeal

The coin I was interested in buying was a MS67 Jefferson with outstanding color that has a PCGS price guide near $150 for the grade

I was willing to go $300 and when I asked the price, Andy said $1500 - which he probably got from someone, somewhere, sometime

I guess I am too cheap to dig that deep for a top notch coin for fear of being buried the rest of my life
and so have never bought any coin from them yet

<< <i>I guess, someday, I'll stop by and throw a few hundred on one of those coins that I know are understruck, overgraded and way overpriced that he's trying to find a sucker for. Perhaps this will open up those new avenues between us........ that I fondly miss.

What was it someone said in this thread, he's not a market maker for some of the coins he sells? image

    Leo >>

Leo- I enjoy your candid remarks. Your remarks may or may not be the same for some but right on for others.

For the money asked for a lot of coins having a picture should be no big deal. How much time is spent writing the descriptions? A basic picture anyway.

Ambro51- You are suggesting that your PQ coins purchased from the above dealer did not warrant a strong buyback? That is probably the case with a lot of dealers. For all PQ coins sold at strong prices only 1 in 50 return what most think.image I do not play in that area as i am sure that my odds would be much worse.

The 1956 NGC 67, is that a scratch running across Lincoln's forehead. Whatever it is, it is distracting IMO for a coin to grade MS67. It is a very colorful coin and I enjoyed viewing the coin for the exception of the line on the forehead. What do you say? Are you looking to upgrade, even if that coin resides in a MS66 holder? Since this is not my series, I don't know if the strike can be improved or not. But you should know. What do you say? The pictures are excellent, by the way, nicely done.

Hey Leo, thanks for the compliments on the photos, they're mostly done by Mark Goodman.

The 1956 Lincoln graded NGC MS-67RB in my set has a wonderful obverse and below average reverse, for the assigned grade. The line on the head is a die crack, which may or may not affect the grade, depending on who you ask. The luster and toning, the 'pop', on the obverse is the best I have seen for the date, the reverse is just, eh, ugly. If split grades were still in use, I would probably grade the coin 67/64, due to the weak reverse strike at the upper left and uneven color. I submitted the coin to PCGS as a quarterly special at last year's Philly show with a minimum grade of 66BN and the coin DNC, came back with a note indicating a minimum grade of 65RB. So the coin is what it is, although I still don't think it would look out of place in a 66 holder. When I originally bought the coin, I paid the going rate for what a PCGS graded 66RB with very nice toning would have sold for. I'm always looking for upgrades, and if I found a coin that was graded lower that I liked better, then yes, I would consider it an upgrade.

  • "If split grades were still in use, I would probably grade the coin 67/64, due to the weak reverse strike at the upper left and uneven color" Arent there issues as well with the obverse strike? The color is great but I have seen better strikes.

Just to be redundant: Andy and Alynne are as good as they get. They have been honest, thoroughly informative and helpful at every step for years with me, and they have always backed their coins without question.
