Avatar help needed..

Hi all,
I am trying to upload a pic I want to use for my avatar and keep having trouble. I have tried to paste it from photobucket with no success and have clicked on the brouse button and tried uploading from my pictures on my computer. I have it down to 9.87 kb which should not be a problem, but I keep getting an error message that the format is not recognized. Do I have to use the image thing in brackets or am I just missing something simple?
Below is the pic I am trying to use. no problem getting it here. It just won't upload on my profile.

This should work, it is way smaller than it needs to be. Are you on a MAC? There is a trick to getting them uploaded from there, but I am not on a mac.

IIRC, some Mac browsers don't work with the upload program. Safari does.
It may be simpler to download the photo from photobucket to your computer and do the avatar upload from there.

Thanks for everyones help/input. Downloaded avitar sizer and it worked. I might get the hang of this place after all!
