Anyone else have some 2008-W Proof Gold Buff 'modern crap?'

I bought 2 $10 2008-W buffs from the mint (1 ms 1 pr) due to the similarity in size to a buff nickel, then bought 2 $25 proofs on word of low mintage from this board. Thanks!

They remain, whether in MS or Proof, one of my faves, regardless of the super-low mintages, one-year run, and unspeakable beauthy.

I have a set of each, one proof and one uncirculated. Every so often I take them out of the vault, put them in each set box and admire them. They are gorgeous. Usually I grade my coins, but these are too gorgeous the way they are in the box.

I purchased a $25 PCGS PR70 FS from a boardmember in July or Aug 2008 for $700...that was the going price then...1 1/2 years later they were selling for around $2k. "Nasty modern junk."

Picked up a few 2009s but only one 2008 and that was the celebration buff; sure screwed up that one. At least I picked up a 4 coin proof eagle set.

2008 was the year that I liquidated all of our retirement accounts and bought all of the lowest mintage Modern Bullion that I could lay my hands on. ericj96's thread and a few others were just what the doctor ordered, at a pretty opportune time. Now that Michael Zelinski and Dave Harper have great websites for this same type of discussion, the access to good information just gets better and better. It's still a good time to be a Modern collector.

And Jerry is 100% correct. For the longest time, nobody wanted the Gold Buffs. I only bought mine from the Mint at the last minute, after a review of what they were and how they fit into the scheme of things. That's why I hold a bit of healthy skepticism in reserve on the ATB 5 ozers. I know that they will go up, and they will probably stay up due to the massive launch hype, but eventually even the Gold Buffs have drifted back towards Earth and so will the ATB 5 ozers.

The true Modern Bullion rarity is still 2,253. And 8,883. And 9,074. And 10,000. And 4,020. And maybe even 3,140. At this time I see no reason why 27,000 and 33,000 won't join that group as well, but give the Mint some time. From what we've already seen, anything could and probably will happen.

I have all the 2008 W Gold Buffalo Issues accept the one ouncers in both MS and PF. I have two $25 Buffalo Proofs. One PCGS PF 70. The other I just sent in for grading. Should know in a few days. The half is the king of Buffalo Proofs mintage wise I believe.

Had a 2008-W 4 Coin Buffalo Set 70 Ultra Cameo (they were NGC).

Stolen, along with my other coins. Melted, along with the other gold (e.g. no motto $10 ms65), platinum, and silver.

Good news though most of the 'worthless' coins were recovered... I never bought any modern again after that. All of my 2006-W gold Eagle Reverse proofs were melted too. what a shame

The high bullion prices in the 1st half of 2008, sales suspensions, over abundance of Mint offerings, and the economic crisis during the 2nd half of '08 were major contributors to the low sales numbers. Likely, a once in a lifetime convergence.
