Bank Roll vs NF String

I purchased some rolls of 2009-D Jefferson nickels on ebay. The picture showed the NF String rolls however what I received were bank rolls. Can someone please explain the difference?

And more importantly, long term will there be a difference in the value of the bank rolls vs the NF String rolls should I decide the sell the entire roll?

I consider them one & the same. Now a Mint wrapped Roll, well you're talking a different animal there.

I believe NF S is contracted by the Fed Reserve to wrap rolls for banks as they are ordered. On the other hand, banks may wrap their own rolls when they have sufficient coins on hand ... It saves them on fees charged by the Feds.

can you show the link off ebay and/ or a picture of what you received ??

  • NF string sells the paper that all denominations are rolled in, they do not roll the coins........

My point is this........I own a Glory wr-400 machine that rolls 40 rolls per minute of any denomination, this machine uses NF string paper...I do not sell rolls, I have a concious...
also I am not the only person that owns one of these machines.....

    enough said....happy holidays!
  • Most of the coins in NF String rolls have been searched and rewraped..Most dealers do this and tell people they are original just to get more money for them from buyers.
  • Thanks everyone for the information. I've been coin collecting for several years now and realize how much I still need to learn.

I'm afraid NF "strung" me along, too. The responses above are not necessarily in agreement, though. What I have seen on this board in the past is what OPA wrote:

I interpreted that to mean there was less handling of these coins, and no searching. The NF String rolls generally bring a little premium in the ebay auctions.

No way to know if your rolls are virgin, regardless of wrapper, unless you buy them directly from the mint. Even coins that come from a fed reserve bank in NF S wrappers may have been returned by a branch bank and re-wrapped.

Coin Wrap Inc is the largest that I know of that has contracts with the Federal Reserve to roll the coins that are ordered by the banks, my understanding is that the mint supplies the Federal reserve with the huge bags ....I forget what they call them... anyway when the Fed gets orders from the banks they give the coins to companies like Coin Wrap inc to roll...

Once these rolls are delivered to the banks and distributed it's a crap shoot .....some dealer/resellers just sell the rolls at a profit without ever looking at a single coin, and some look and pick and re-roll the leftovers at a profit...

It's just the way it is....

So it's a roll of the dice, after a while looking you will be able to tell to a certain degree if the roll ...."original roll" you just opened is the real deal or not....

    I hope this helps!

I think it helps me, Sumorada. You are saying that Coin Wrap does some of the rolling, but NF String just sells paper (whether or not they roll is irrelevant if others are using their paper)?

How does one know if their roll(s) is from Coin Wrap?

I received several.n.f.string. rolls from the bank all brilliant uncirculated
2010p or d coins at the ends. I checked each roll was 60 to 80% 2010s
The rest were.mixed jeffersons. I heard the fed was going to release them as.mixed rolls.

This is not foolproof as I just learned while looking on ebay for an example to show you....but here ya go..NF String Paper LINK NF String Boxes LINK

The "sealed" boxes whatever the denomination have a double circle on the outside of the box (opposite the side with the holes) this is where Coin Wrap Inc (CWI) stamps the Region, the Date and the INSP code...for example it may say......CWI 103 Feb 20 2010 INSP XXX7...

All of the boxes have the double circle and should be stamped similar to the above but you will find that a lot of the ones on ebay have no stamp or a phony stamp...and so on,

In a nutshell, anybody can buy the paper and the boxes.....look around ebay for a while, you will get the hang of it.
