How do you cope with not being able to afford all the coins you want?

My only answer is that I don't cope too well.

I always spend way less than I have so if I really need to stretch, I can. That said, I realize there are nice coins that I can't consider and moderately nice coins that I could stretch for but don't dare. I have too many other things (like a family and a junior golf career) to fund. --Jerry

I don't cope very well but I try.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Yeah, but since you are paying them, how does that help with the OP's problem? image

For me, I just realize there are more than coins in life and that I can always find a coin that I enjoy AND can afford.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Pretty well.

In actuality, I can afford more than I buy.... but that is not how I choose to spend (or save) my money.

There will always be something you can't have either because of price or availability. I can easily talk myself out of wanting something by just reminding myself, "I've gone ( X = your age) without that (coin, car, house etc.) I can go on some more yet".
    Works for me!

I look for a grade or few grades lower, or I do a layaway. I know many board members done beleive in layaway, but I have gotten a lot of nice coins that way.

The same way I cope with not being able to have other material goods, I suppose. I simply do without and don't spend a lot of time fretting about it.

This is the statement I used for my registry sets:

<< <i>This is a set that will probably not be completed in my lifetime. I will always enjoy the wonder of coins I do not yet or may never own while being appreciative of the coins I have been lucky enough to acquire over the past 44 years. Even many of the coins I now have are coins I could only dream about when I was a 7 year old coin collector in 1960, a 17 year old coin collector in 1970, a 27 year old coin collector in 1980, a 37 year old collector in 1990, and a 47 year old coin collector in 2000. So fellow collectors, never let your sense of wonder and dreams die!! >>

I see that I need to add ....."and a 57 year old coin collector in 2010"

Like everything else in life that I'd like but don't have, I prioritize my needs, wants, and money and see what I can do. One day maybe I'll get it, but worst case scenario is that I don't. If I'm healthy enough to wish I had some more coins, then good enough for me.

I have never been concerned with such an issue. There are always desirable items or goals that are beyond reach. I admire objects for their beauty without a need to possess. I am impressed by great achievements and the skills/talent it took to make it happen. I feel no need for the spotlight of fame. I am actually a very happy individual. Cheers, RickO

Thats not an issue....I just can't find the right coins

I do so by accepting reality.

The reality is that there are many, many more coins out there that I desire, but could never afford.

Over at Legend, I could easily blow $200K on SLQs.

At Pinnacle, I could spend the same amount blasting through their recent WLH acquisitions. [though most are on hold now, anyway - quality sells]

Then there are the series that are totally out of my reach: I think the 10 dollar Indian is a stunningly beautiful coin. Owned one when I was younger. Doubt I will ever own another. Sad, but reality.

Bottom line: I 'cope' by focusing on what little I can afford, and ogle at others' collections and pix here on this forum. I do the best I can with each series that I focus on.

Don't spend time thinking of what you cannot achieve - it bitters the sweetness of your actual achievements.

How would you be able to cope with life, knowing that there are plenty of things besides coins that unaffordable (unless you're super rich). All that we middle-class folks can do is ooh and ahh.
