2 Courtlandt Street, NYC, where the Feuchtwangers were struck....TODAY!

For some reason I dont think the good Doctor would recognize the place, but this was the location of his business establishment, which was a Pharmacy, odds and ends shop, and his "mint". *click on the arrow when the map comes up, then the street view picture appears*

He moved there early in 1837, leaving 377 Broadway, which, again, I dont think he would recognize

A little known piece of lore goes something like this: in a display of homage to the good doctor, New Yorkers will still exclaim "Hey Buddy, Feucht You" when cut off in traffic. Did you get a chance to hear this today?

That's pretty funny, I always thought he was an evil Doctor...

I couldnt get a link to work either, but just copy and paste the two line web address in the OP and you will find both. Click on the red arrow when the street map comes up and a wonderful panning image of the street view appears.

As to whether this is the same brick and mortar building that was there in 1837, I have no idea. It is not a skyscraper in an area where they abound, so I suppose it is possible that the actual walls and building are very old. Perhaps one of our forum members in NYC can pay a visit there and make some inquiries???? I only seem to get to NYC about once every decade....

From reading Bowers "More Adventures with Rare Coins" he includes a interesting tidbit of information, an old clipping from a newspaper, which indicates that the good Doctor shared the building (perhaps a different floor) with a very trendy (for the day) restaurant. And now, today, we see the little gold shop there and yes, a trendy restaurant. Times change, but perhaps not so much.

    Interesting!

A little research was done on this building by a member of another coin forum, and it appears that the first Certificate of Occupancy for this building was issued in 1939, as new construction. So.......the dream of the good Doctors coat still hanging on the coatrack (like Edisons)...has vanished.

As much of New York History...the past has been demolished in our rush forward and though the address is the same, the structure is not. But, it does have a basement...so maybe the old walls from the first structure remain?

    Still worth a visit there..........

Cortlandt Street was a great collection of shops. From perpetual motion machines to electronics. It was destroyed to make room for the WTC.

Well.....maybe part of Courtlandt street was 'destroyed' but this building is still very much there.

I think the "Defiant Eagle Society" should make a field trip there on Feuchtwangers birthday, January 11

Now, that would be a hoot, wouldnt it??? image
