There needs to be a serious show about coin collecting on TV...

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 14,471 ✭✭✭✭✭
Id like that. TLC or Discovery....a serious show, with interviews, talks with collectors about their collections, whats in the coin news, targeted commercials from the US Mint, gold vendors etc.... A weekly show.

Rather watch that than those southern guys killing alligators.

Whew, for a second there I thought you were thinking reality show where we follow a collector filling out his submission and then getting all ticked when his coins come back Genuine..you know, all the real life scenarios we collectors live with like getting sniped at the last second, etc.

Well, with YouTube, Skype, and modern technology, just about anyone can "broadcast" via the Internet. An audio only podcast might be a lower profile start (less work), but any enterprising person with the time, minimal equipment, and industry connections can go for it. If it becomes popular a person has the potential to get ad revenue from YouTube/Google. Sounds a bit strange, but there are YouTube "channels" for much less popular hobbies. Mostly the presenters do it for fun, but a few do make a little money from their endeavors.

Rick Snow already released three videos about Indian cents. That could just be a start. Forumites like LeeG could do a series of talks on classic commems, the outline of material is already there. I'd bet that would be a popular YouTube series, though hours and hours of additional production work.

Perhaps they could feature coin dealing (or doctoring) on "Dirty Jobs" image

The dweed channel. Remember that ham radio operators have much cooler flea markets.

Youtube sounds like a good idea. I can watch porn on Youtube. Uh, I mean one can watch porn on Youtube.

Would numismatic porn include having masked coin doctors revealing or at least demonstrating their techniques? An Iron Doctor contest? Doctor rants taunting us and horrifying the world with knowledge of their biggest scores? How about a Coin Doctor trial? We already have a list of methods of execution longer than the list of coin doctors themselves.

Any of these could be a mini-series. Not very educational, but it's great television.

Probably the view of the images of various coin surfaces taken by a SEM (or SecurePlus laser)and displayed on HD are a wonderful learning tool.

Is there a Yahoo group for numismatists? What do you have to do to get bammed?

A few years ago one coin dealer tried to pitch a reality show to a production company where cameras would follow the company around at their office and at shows. Needless to say that idea didn't get picked up.

Crab fishing, driving on ice and animal hunting make for good tv. I'm not so sure if grading coins and spending all day in a room full of guys with dubious hygiene practices does.

Interesting such a channel does not exist, as "dweeds" of any given strain tend to be rather devoted to whatever their hobby is and would probably follow their respective hobby porn more closely with both their attention and wallets than devotees of, say, Man vs. Food.

They would have to hide their faces and voices. In this case, what would probably be more interesting would be Coin Doctor Lucha Libre tournament, perhaps culminating in a championship fall on Dweed Pay-per-view.

Ridiculous. Unless it was one show every six months. Not enough of an audience. Cheers, RickO

It could be a reality show, where an old-widow actress takes her dearly-departed husbands PCGS-graded coins into different B&Ms to see what she can get for them.

It would be called "Con Stars"

There needs to be a show; we could really benefit from getting the word out there about all the crap and scams that hit casual collectors and the lay public.

No, there are a lot more people out there who enjoy WATCHING SOMEONE ELSE kill alligators than enjoy WATCHING SOMEONE ELSE collect coins.

Im sure a half hour a week show would be just fine. Perhaps take off one rerun of Yo Gabba Gabba....and run it then. I wouldnt doubt PCGS could produce one heck of a good show, if they put their minds to it.

I agree and would be willing to invest some $$ to see it happen. It's long overdue in my not so humble opinion.

Edited to add: While I agree about the alligator opinions etc, I DO think there's enough collectors and investors to support a periodic show on television if it's done right.

BNB would easily fit the lead character. His YouTube coin pitch vids are hilarious.
